Riots in Peru and Lima
In Peru, unrest began after President Pedro Castillo was impeached and arrested in early December for allegedly trying to dissolve Congress. A week later, a state of emergency was declared and demonstrations broke out across the country. Unfortunately, some demonstrations ended in blood. More than 50 people have died since the riots began.
Lima largely calm
Two weeks ago, tournament organizers 4D Esports stated “that they have no reason to believe that the state of emergency will affect the Major”. Several people from Peru had also spoken out, saying that Lima itself was completely calm and that the uprisings were taking place in the outlying provinces. But not everyone is convinced of this, because since then there have also been tensions in Lima.
4D Esports has a plan B up its sleeve
There was another statement from Ramón “Swadow” López, 4D Esports COO on backup plans for esports.gg, stating that the tournament organizers have a plan B in place “should the situation deteriorate quickly.” However, they still believe it is a “worst-case scenario” and “extremely unlikely” at this point.
At the moment it’s still unclear what this Plan B will look like or if it’s even needed, but fans can rest easy because the Major should definitely take place, albeit perhaps not at the originally planned location.
More options for the major
If all else fails and Plan B falls through, there is still the option of holding the Lima Major online. It’s an option that’s been used a lot since the pandemic, but neither fans nor players are particularly enthusiastic about it.
For one thing, there could be issues with latency, and besides, that whole sense of community and vibe would be missing. Being there live is something different than just watching from the screen. However, as of this writing, the Lima Major is still scheduled to start on February 22.
