The Director of Beastcoast and the COO of 4D Esports have both spoken out about the precarious situation in Peru. Both have stated that despite the unrest and the state of emergency that was recently declared, Lima is safe and that the Dota 2 Major should not be in jeopardy.

At the moment there are various protests and political unrest in Peru that endanger the future of Lima Major hosted by 4D Esports. Lima has now declared a state of emergency and the news reports paint a very uncertain situation. However, these reports may not reflect the actual situation in Lima compared to other regions of the country.

Because if you ask people inside Peru, most say Lima is quiet and the protests are taking place in other regions such as Puno, a city 800 miles south of Lima. Beastcoast Regional Director Alejandro Moral has explained what is happening in Peru.

Current situation in Lima

Alejandro Moral believes that the capital is safe because the riots and the people who instigate them are in other provinces and far from Lima. Therefore, he advises against traveling to other parts of the country. He said:

“Lima is very safe at the moment and they are very welcome. Nothing will happen at the Major.”

Regarding the declared state of emergency, he explained that Peru has been in a state of emergency again and again for three years and that there are absolutely no restrictions on tourists or airports.

“So this state of emergency doesn’t change anything for the Major. It’s still going on. On Saturday I was at an event at a gaming house full of influencers, Dota people, media companies and a ton of journalists. And none of them spoke of the major canceling or that it was in danger.”

Protests are taking place outside of Lima

Moral also commented on the nearly 50 people killed in the protests, assuring that these violent incidents are not taking place near Lima.

“The death toll has not exceeded 50. That’s pretty high for protests, though. But that’s because the protests were very aggressive, and the police and army had to use force to quell them. Taking over an airport is no small thing. So yeah, there’s rioting across the country, far away. But I believe in every country in South America nobody is safe in the general sense. There was a major in Rio recently, and there are favelas in Rio.”

Similarly, the CS:GO Major in Rio de Janeiro was quiet and there were no incidents, although there are still riots in the favelas in the Brazilian city.

4D Esports comments on Dota 2 Major

4D Esports COO Ramón “Swadow” López also spoke about the current situation and the potential impact on the Lima Major. He joins Morale in saying there is nothing to worry about because of the state of emergency.

“The fact is that a state of emergency is declared in preparation for future action, but usually it’s only declared as a precautionary measure. 4D deeply understands the situation in Puno and we offer our condolences to those affected. We hope that the incidents will be resolved quickly and peacefully.”

Like Moral, López said there is no reason to believe the state of emergency will affect the Major in any way.
