The Lima Major 2023 is at risk of being held because Lima, the Peruvian city where it will be organized, is in a state of emergency due to protests.

Since Valve announced that one of its most important events of the year would be held in South America, the expectations and dreams of many fans came true. Naturally, this generated impatience in the Dota 2 community in South America, especially in Lima, Peru, the host city.

The South American community has shown a great passion for Dota 2. In addition, Peruvian teams have given a lot to talk about in every international tournament. Teams, such as beastcoast and Thunder Awaken, have aroused many emotions in South American territory.

The Lima Major 2023 at risk

Unfortunately for the esports community in South America, the realization of The Lima Major 2023 is likely at risk.

Right now, things don’t seem to be going very well for the tournament due to different situations that are being experienced in this country. It has nothing to do with the organization, teams, and fans. Instead, it is due to the country as such, Peru, which is currently in a state of emergency.

The national government of Peru declared a state of emergency in Lima and three other regions after three weeks of intense protests over the appointment of President Dina Boluarte. This was after former president Pedro Castillo was impeached and subsequently put behind bars for illegally attempting to dissolve the Congress of the Republic.

Human losses in the protests

The Peruvian government has been unable to calm its population. That is why they ordered security agents to break up the protests one way or another. This has triggered the protests to become much more violent, and it is estimated that up to 42 people have lost their lives.

Massive on-going protests in Peru. 17 people were killed last week. Tourists were evacuated from tourist sites like Machu Picchu. Will the major be cancelled? from DotA2

In addition, it is reported that more than 100 roads have been blocked as part of the protests.

This situation worries many people in the Dota 2 community, as it has made the vast majority fear that The Lima Major 2023 will inevitably be canceled. We have Janne “Gorgc” Stefanovski, who believes the announcement will come soon. Gorgc currently plays for Team Bald Reborn, a Swedish Dota 2 team.

For now, neither Valve nor 4D Esports (The company in charge of organizing the event) has said anything about it. Even the organizers have published that they have advanced the sale of tickets in the second phase. Remember that, in the first sales phase, tickets were sold out in 9 minutes.

This leads us to believe that Valve and 4D Esports are confident that The Lima Major 2023 will take place as scheduled. While this could change at any time, the protests could also end, and everything would go as planned.

This would be a significant blow to the South American community

Should the event be canceled, the Dota 2 community in South America would be the primary affected. Unfortunately, after waiting for Valve to decide to organize a major event on its soil, it could now be suspended for reasons unrelated to esports.

But there is no doubt that the safety of players and fans is more important than anything else. So let’s keep an eye out for more information in the coming days.
