Dota 2 Major in Lima despite riots in Peru?

There has been violent unrest in Peru for several weeks after the country’s president was arrested earlier this month. Violent protests keep raging in the country, and some have reportedly lost their lives. The DPC Major was is supposed to take place in Peru’s capital Lima at the end of February 2023, but that is now hanging in the air as it is not clear how the situation in the country will develop.

There are still two months until the Dota 2 Major in Peru. This may sound like a long time, but one mustn’t forget that Valve still has to make some preparations before then. A lot can happen until then, but Valve needs to decide on the location of the Major as soon as possible.

Events like this are highly unpredictable and at the moment, the situation doesn’t look safe enough for fans and players to travel to Peru. If there are any flights at all in February, it could be that Dota 2 Major visitors could be in danger caused by the violent protests in the city.

Strong protests in Peru

Most of the protests seem to be taking place in the regions, but the situation is also affecting Lima, with roads and airports blocked by the rioters. Although there was a drop in violence over the Christmas period in Catholic Peru, the last reported death occurred on December 27, following the riots at Ayacucho airport. The victim was allegedly not involved in the protests, just a person who happened to be nearby. Local media reports that strikes are set to resume on January 3 and it is difficult to predict how long they will last and when the political situation will finally ease.

Political rumors

On December 7, former President Pedro Castillo was arrested after attempting to illegally dissolve the state Congress. His place was taken by former President Dina Boluarte. These events sparked protests, roads were blocked, the airport was occupied and buildings were set on fire. A state of emergency was declared in the country on December 14 and curfews were imposed in several provinces.

Does the Dota event have to be postponed?

It happens from time to time that Dota events are postponed and rescheduled. The International 2021 has been relocated from Sweden to Romania due to the strict coronavirus restrictions. Unfortunately, the event still took place without spectators, as Bucharest was hit by a sudden wave of the coronavirus right at the time of TI11. In early 2022, Valve also canceled the first Major of the season for the same reason, prompting a major outcry from the community.
