A long list of upcoming Legends of Runeterra champions (including those who are about to be released alongside the Empires of the Ascended set) has just leaked! And, frankly, this isn’t the first time it’s happened either. It seems as though Riot has a knack for accidentally releasing champion voice lines ahead of time. A similar thing happened prior to the release of the Rising Tides expansion as well. A whopping thirteen champions were “unearthed” back then, and all of them were subsequently released across both Rising Tides and Call of the Mountain.

This basically means that we know exactly which champions will be released over the next couple of months! Exciting stuff! There’s a lot of ground to cover, so let’s get down to business!

Empires of the Ascended | Leaked Champions List

Because a similar (or identical, rather) situation already happened last year, we can confidently say that this list is now all but official. The following fourteen champions will be released across the next two expansions, although we still don’t know which champions will be released when. Still, this is more than enough information for us to sink our teeth into!

  • Azir (Shurima)
  • Ekko (Piltover & Zaun)
  • Irelia (Ionia)
  • Jarvan IV (Demacia)
  • Kindred (Runeterra)
  • LeBlanc (Noxus)
  • Lissandra (Freljord)
  • Malphite (Ixtal)
  • Nasus (Shurima)
  • Pyke (Bilgewater)
  • Renekton (Shurima)
  • Sivir (Shurima)
  • Taliyah (Shurima)
  • Zilean (Runeterra)

Overall, this is quite an exciting (and highly eclectic) list! We’re getting five champions from Shurima, one from Ionia, P&Z, Demacia, Noxus, Freljord, and Bilgewater, with a couple of surprises thrown in as well. Heck, “curveballs” would be the more apt description. Malphite would be the first champion in Legends of Runeterra to hail from Ixtal. He’s not exactly a fan-favorite champion, nor is he the most alluring one from Ixtal either. (that’d probably be Qiyana, Rengar, or Zyra) Still, he’s an interesting choice at least playstyle-wise.

Finally, Kindred and Zilean don’t have a region per se — they’re officially categorized under “Runeterra” on Riot’s official website. Does this mean they’ll occupy an entirely new region, or will they be slotted into an existing one? It’s impossible to know at this point in time, but it’s an interesting question regardless.

An Exciting Moment for Theory-crafting

Legends of Runeterra — 2021 Roadmap

Now that we know who’s going to join the ever-growing Legends of Runeterra champion roster, we start theorizing on what they’ll bring to the table and just how seamless a transition they’ll have from the full-fledged game in terms of identity and playstyle. We have a couple of Assassins like LeBlanc and Pyke so they’ll probably rely on hard-hitting burst damage. Then there’s Zilean who, arguably, could have the most interesting mechanics of them all.

Either way, it’ll be interesting to see which of these leaked champions will be released alongside next month’s Empires of the Ascended set. A couple of picks from Shurima are basically a given, but other than that, we don’t have any additional information to go by.

As always, we’ll bring you any updates from the moment they hit the web! In the meantime, make sure to go over our patch 2.1 breakdown!
