Italian car brand Automobili Lamborghini, owned by the Volkswagen Group, has started its own esports team and has already added three sim racers to the team.

The Automobili Lamborghini Esports Team, as it is officially called, will participate in the GT World Challenge Esports Championships in the game Assetto Corsa Competizione.

New members supported by Squadra Corse

Interestingly, the new members of the Lamborghini esports team will be directly supported by Squadra Corse, Lamborghini’s in-house racing team.

The car company will be adding a team boss, driver, coach and engineers to the esports project. The staff will help by offering their expertise in the development and analysis of telemetry data.

Lamborghini said in a release that the company was impressed with the success of The Real Race, a virtual tournament that Lamborghini established in late 2020. The automaker also announced the return of The Real Race in 2022; the dates of these events will be announced in the following weeks.

Sim racing is almost no different from real car racing

Giorgio Sanna, Head of Motorsport at Automobili Lamborghini, said, “Sim racing is an important platform in today’s motorsport scene. Video games were born to allow those who did not have opportunities to race in real life to pretend to be professional drivers. ”

Sanna continued, “Now, after decades of development in the industry, simulated racing is getting closer and closer to its real-life counterpart and is now almost indistinguishable from professional motorsports.”

Jordan Sherrat, Gianfranco Giglioli and Giorgio Simonini will represent the team as drivers.

With the support of Lamborghini’s in-house racing team, it will be interesting to see how the team performs in the world of sim racing. Lamborghini is not the only car brand with an esports team, but it is good to see such a high-profile brand fully committed to esports.
