Teamfight Tactics 14.9: Patch Notes, Updtates, and More

Teamfight Tactics’ next big patch is on the way, with Patch 14.9 promising some significant changes to rebalance the Set 11 meta. Among the biggest updates are reworked to the Ghostly and Heavenly traits, aiming to make them less generically overpowered and more tailored toward boosting their own trait units.

Ghostly Hauntings Dispelled

2024 04 26T233050.296

The Ghostly trait has been a staple since Set 11 launched, summoning Spectres that damage all enemies when allies cast spells. However, it created an over-centralized meta where the optimal strategy was stacking Ghostly champs like Caitlyn or Kayn while your carries didn’t even need to be Ghostly themselves.

In Patch 14.9, the Spectres will only boost damage for Ghostly trait units, not the entire team. Their per-spectre damage has been buffed to compensate at 8/14/20/36% instead of the current 5/10/16/32%. This should make Ghostly champs like Morgana or Senna more viable as semi-carries in their own right.

“The goal is to make Ghostly as a trait more cohesive and less of a generically powerful aura that gets slapped onto any comp,” explained TFT developer Riot Cephaloid. “We want to open up the design space for future Ghostlies to be real carries, not just aura-bots.”

Heavenly Reroll Rises

The Heavenly Reroll bonus stat aura was theoretically meant to be one of Set 11’s premier reroll comps. In practice, players usually just two-starred a couple of Heavenlies and then slotted them into other builds for the free stats.

Patch 14.9 is taking a big swing at making Heavenly Reroll more viable. Rather than scaling off unit star levels, the bonus stats will simply increase per Heavenly unit on your board, capping at a massive 200% for all 6 units. Seasoned TFT players predict this change could re-establish Heavenly as a legitimate late-game pivot.

“I’m excited to finally be able to force Heavenly to reroll again,” said prominent TFT streamer and competitor Boxbox. “The old system was pretty underwhelming, but this patch’s changes look insane for an Idas to reroll carry at 6 Heavenly.”

System and Balance Adjustments

As is typical for a mid-set patch, 14.9 will also tweak XP costs, shop odds, and player damage numbers to re-balance the pace and flow of games. The goal is to reduce the prevalence of 3-star 4-cost carriers that have become a bit too consistent to hit.

  • Player damage is being increased at Stages 4-6 to raise late-game lethality
  • Level 8/9 shop odds are decreasing for 4-costs while increasing for lower costs
  • The cost to level from 8->9 is rising, while 9->10 is dropping to delay level 9 timing
  • The Cho’Gath, Kha’Zix, Neeko, and Syndra augments that facilitated 4-cost rerolling are being removed

Some other targeted adjustments are coming for underperforming traits like Umbral and Duelist, while Dryad is seeing nerfs. On the champion side, Darius and Tristana are taking hits as premium openers, with the latter’s attack speed nerfed but base AD increased.

New overlapping changes are set to drop on the PBE as soon as Patch 14.9 prepares for launch on May 1st. It remains to be seen if these sweeping meta adjustments will successfully reshape the current TFT Set 11 landscape heading into the second Tacticians event tournament.

Double Up Sees Love Too

The unique Double Up duo mode is also getting some quality-of-life changes in 14.9. The reinforcement timer granting new units is increasing from 7 to 12 seconds, addressing frustration with the breakneck pace. Player damage taken is being rounded up properly, and base damage values are increasing across all stages.

With the twin trajectories of more competitive integrity and better Double Up experience, it’s an exciting time for Teamfight Tactics players across both modes. Be sure to check back here for additional Patch 14.9 notes coverage as more details get revealed on the PBE over the next two weeks.
