Not BDS, not Moist, but Oxygen Esports grabbed the first title of the 2022-23 RLCS season in Europe. In the Grand Final of Fall Open Europe Regional 1, the team defeated Karmine Corp 4-2 and defended their top seed from the closed qualifier.

The newly formed Oxygen roster consists of the Englishman Archie “archie” Pickthall and the two Dutchmen Ole “Oaly” van Doorn and Joris “Joreuz” Robben. The team’s victory at the Fall Open marks the org’s first main Rocket League accomplishment — this is what a successful NA to EU move looks like!

New Oxygen roster is in a good form

Despite the new composition, Oxygen showed that the team was in a good shape already in the top-16 qualifier. With nine games won and two lost, they clearly dominated the qualifier. Their only two lost games were against Karmine Corp, where three of the five games went into overtime, concluding 3-2 for Oxygen.

However, the main event started with an upset in round one of the Swiss Stage. Aogiri, the last seed of the tournament, beat Oxygen 3-2, following three overtimes. Using the loss as a wake-up call, three Swiss Stage wins followed for Oxygen, while losing only one map against Monkeys. With a record of 11-4, Oxygen secured a playoff spot.

Joreuz ice cold in the knockout phase

In the quarter-finals, Oxygen faced G1, a Spanish roster that signed with the org the same day as Oxygen did. Both teams exchanged offensive blows, with Joreuz ultimately making the difference in the game with his eight goals. With 13 goals to 11 and a score of 4-2, Oxygen secured their place in the semifinals.

Here they met Quadrant, who had previously knocked out the reigning world champions Team BDS. In this match, Joreuz contributed with eight goals again, even netting a hat-trick against Quadrant in the last game, while Archie pushed Oxygen ahead with 13 saves. The team advanced to the Grand Final with a 4-0 sweep.

Grand Final

The Grand Final between Oxygen and Karmine Corp started with a win for Oxygen after overtime, which was followed by two dominant games from Karmine Corp. What followed was a timeout, when Oxygen reflected on their own abilities and answered with an offensive and three strong games with 11 goals to two. These sealed the RLCS 2022-23 European Fall Open win for Oxygen Esports.

This marks also the first win by a European team that is not Moist, Queso, or BDS since November 2021, when the winner was Endpoint.
