FIFA 23: Why does Atalanta not have its original name in the game?

All those Atalanta team lovers who play FIFA 23 must settle for Bergamo Calcio, an improvised name of the club in the game. We are talking about a recent incident, as the club had its original name in last year’s version. This change has left many people confused.

Name changes

Strange as it may seem, changing the name of a club is not a new incident in the game. Usually, creative titles have a relationship to the club in real life. However, in the case of the Atlanta team, possibly the reason for the name change is that they are based in the Bergamo region of Italy.

There are different reasons for a soccer club not to carry its original name in the game. Although EA Sports does not explicitly explain what they base their decisions on, it mostly has to do with commercial aspects.

Bergamo Calcio in FIFA 23

Let’s talk about why Atalanta is now called Bergamo Calcio and how much the team’s authenticity has been preserved.

FIFA 23’s Bergamo Calcio retains the club’s original players, but in other areas, it is affected.

In the early access available at the end of September 2022, we were shown that Atalanta would not be in its original form in FIFA 23. However, it is a trend that several Serie A clubs have followed in the new version.

Now, the main reason for Atalanta to carry a fake name is due to licensing issues with the club. Usually, EA Sports has several licenses with clubs and with footballers. Bergano Calcio is because the club has an exclusive agreement with eFootball 2023.

Konami Holdings Corporation has been quite aggressive in acquiring exclusive agreements in recent years. Therefore, we could see it with big names such as Bayern Munich and Manchester United, among others. However, it is essential to note that these clubs have kept their identity in EA Sports, which is not the same for the Italian club.

Team identity

Fortunately, the entire squad is fully licensed, which means that all real-life players are present in the game. Moreover, it is updated with the latest summer signings, and several of their faces are scanned into the game.

We can see the change of identity in the name Bergamo Calcio that EA Sports has used. The publisher has taken the name of the region where the team’s headquarters is located and has given that name.

On the other hand, the original kit and club logo have been avoided; EA Sports do not hold the exclusive license.

Other Italian clubs in FIFA 23 have suffered the same fate, with the Napoli and Roma teams the same as with Atalanta. For the clubs AC Milan and Inter, something similar could happen because they also have agreements with Konami.
