Sonic calls 2022 the best year in franchise’s history

Sonic is one of the essential characters in the history of video games, but it is no secret that the blue hedgehog has had a somewhat irregular curriculum.

While the Sonic franchise has games that marked a great success, it also has other titles that did not do so well. Fortunately, it broke the lousy streak last year and managed to live one of its best years.

Why was 2022 such a good year for Sonic?

In 2021, the Sonic team announced that the 30th-anniversary celebration of the franchise would be taken very seriously. Moreover, this celebration would be so big that it would not only remain in 2021 but would be extended until 2022.

Not one, but two Sonic games were released in 2022 — Sonic Origins and Sonic Frontiers.

Despite some technical problems, Sonic Origins was a thrill for all its long-time fans. Meanwhile, Sonic Frontiers features the fast hedgehog in an open world, which has received strong criticism from the community, with some arguing that the open world gets in the way instead of helping Sonic’s gameplay.

In the cinema, we were able to see the sequel to the first live-action Sonic movie, which in the opinion of the public, was up to par and was even better. Likewise, a new animated series, Sonic Prime, was released on Netflix two days before Christmas.

Indeed, the last few months have been full of exciting releases for fans of SEGA’s blue hedgehog.

Innovative open-world gameplay in Sonic Frontiers

The new concept for Sonic games is structured by levels known as islands, with five in total to explore with complete freedom. The barrier-free exploration is very entertaining, as you’ll find enemies you’ll have to defeat.

The developers also challenged themselves to create a design with numerous puzzles within the islands populated with enough things for all players to feel the curiosity to explore.

What’s coming up for Sonic?

Most likely, we should soon see multiple Sonic LEGO sets released, as have been previously leaked numerous times. Moreover, the release of up to three downloadable content packs for Sonic Frontiers is expected throughout 2023.

Sonic Team director Takashi Iizuka commented:

“This past year was the most important year in Sonic’s history.”

“We’re preparing a second wave of content to keep fans happy and continue that momentum into 2023. We’ve already announced additional content for Sonic Frontiers, but there’s much more beyond that, so please look forward to it!”
