Vietnam has won gold in the League of Legends event at the 31st Southeast Asian Games, defeating the Phillipines 3-0 in front of a home crowd in Hanoi.

The roster of VCS champions GAM Esports, serving as the Vietnamese National Team, handily defeated the Phillippines to claim the inaugural gold medal in League of Legends.

Vietnam take League gold

As the League of Legends powerhouse of Southeast Asia, Vietnam entered as strong favourites to take home the top prize in the League of Legends event at the Southeast Asian Games. Riot Games’ MOBA was making its debut at the SEA Games after being ommitted from the 2019 Games in Indonesia.

VCS champions GAM Esports, who posted a perfect 15-0 record in the 2022 VCS Spring Split, also won Vietnam’s national qualifier and chose to attend the SEA Games rather than MSI 2022.

Vietnam began by going 4-0 in the group stage, acing the double round-robin against Malaysia and Laos. They followed that with a clean 3-0 sweep against Singapore to set up a gold medal clash with the Phillippines. The Phillipines were represented by the roster of West Point Esports, a team who had gained some international traction after being invited to the Korean-based KeSPA Cup in 2021.

However, Vietnam once again dominated, easily winning the gold medal best-of-five.

GAM Esports will return to the rift for the VCS Summer split, as they look to qualify for Worlds. Meanwhile, Vietnam will look to carry their momentum into the Asian Games, set to be held in China at a time yet to be announced after the initial date of early September was scrapped in early May due to the ongoing global health crisis.
