TI12 group stage phase one results

Phase one of the group stage of TI12 is over and the matches that will determine the upper bracket teams have begun.

Four competitors were eliminated from the race because they finished 5^th in their respective groups. The other 16 teams will continue to fight for a share of the $3 million prize pool.

Group A winners

In group A, Team Spirit had no adversary that could challenge them. They won four consecutive best-of-two series and left no doubt that they are one of the top favorites to win the Aegis of Champions this year.

The other three teams that advanced to phase 2 are Entity, 9Pandas, and Evil Geniuses. Team SMG got eliminated.

Group B winners

In group B of The International 12, Team Liquid and BetBoom Team had excellent results. Liquid got 7 points out of 8 while BetBoom got 6. Azure Ray and Shopify Rebellion were the other two teams that qualified.

As expected, Thunder Awaken got eliminated. It’s actually quite surprising that they managed to draw against Shopify. But other than that, everyone crushed them.

Group C winners

In group C, LGD Gaming won with 7 points, while Gaimin Gladiators finished 2^nd. Nouns and Virtus.pro were the other two teams that qualified.

Unlike the first two groups, this one had a major upset. Beastcoast, who played really well during the regular season, got eliminated after obtaining just 2 points out of 8.

Group D winners

The 4^th group offered another huge upset. PSG Quest, who were expected to do well in the tournament and potentially finish in the top 8, ended up getting eliminated. Tundra Esports won this group with 7 points, proving that Topson really is a phenomenal player.

The other three teams that qualified for phase 2 are TSM, Talon Esports, and Keyd Stars. The first two of these teams were expected to do well, but the 3^rd is a complete outsider that shouldn’t have won a single game. However, they ended up drawing 3 of their matches and losing just once.

Other considerations

In each group, the top 2 teams have, at least in theory, an advantage, because they will compete against the 3^rd/4^th place teams from other groups. We’ve already seen one phase 2 match, in which Team Spirit defeated Shopify Rebellion and sent them to the lower bracket, effectively ruining Arteezy’s dream of winning a TI.
