The highly anticipated 32nd edition of the Southeast Asian Games will kick off on May 8th. It will feature exciting esports titles including Valorant in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The schedule, format, and teams for the group stage have been announced, adding to the excitement of this major regional sporting event.

Initially introduced as a demonstration sport in 2018, Esports has become a significant part of the Southeast Asian Games.  Several titles such as Dota 2, Mobile Legends, and now Valorant are included in the competition. This reflects the growing popularity of esports in the region, with millions of fans and players participating in various esports tournaments and leagues. As mentioned, this is the first time Valorant has been also included in the library. The capital city of Cambodia has been given the responsibility to conduct it from May 8th to May 10th.

Participating nations

The Southeast Asian Games 2023 is set to include 11 nations, however, only 6 nations will participate in the Valorant event. Despite this, fans can look forward to witnessing some of the most skilled players in the region, including stars like Georggyyy, FrostyZ, crazyguy, nephh, and frostmind, who will be representing their countries. With this in mind, here are 6 participating nations:

  1. Cambodia (Host)
  2. Malaysia
  3. Vietnam
  4. Indonesia
  5. Singapore
  6. Philippines

As it will be included in the medal event hence a total of three teams will be awarded at the end of the tournament.

  • Winner: Gold medal
  • Runner up: Silver medal
  • Second runner-up: Bronze Medal

Format and Schedule

The Valorant event at the Southeast Asian Games will be divided into two stages: the Group Stage and the Final Stage.

  • Group Stage: 8th and 9th May

To kick off the competition, the six participating countries will go head-to-head in the Group Stage, utilizing a single round-robin format. With each match being a single-game series, the top four countries will progress to the Final Stage, while the remaining two will be eliminated from the competition.

  • Final Stage: 10th May

In the Final Stage, the four qualified countries will participate in a single-elimination bracket, with the winners of the semifinals advancing to the gold medal match and the losers fighting for the bronze medal. To add to the excitement, all matches in this stage will follow a best-of-three series, making for intense and thrilling competition for players and spectators alike.

This entire tournament will be live-streamed on three popular platforms: Facebook, Twitch, and YouTube via the Valorant esports official channel for particular regions. The tournament will be available in four different languages, including Khmer, English, Vietnamese, and Indonesian, ensuring that fans from all over the world can enjoy the exciting action. With live broadcasts on these major platforms, viewers can follow along with the intense gameplay, and support their favorite teams.
