Riot appears to have ambitious plans in store for League of Legends! Initially, uncertainty among players arose when the news broke that Daniel Emmons, the head of game modes at Riot, was departing from the team. However, the developers have now made it clear that they are envisioning even more significant developments for new game modes.

On December 15, concerns surfaced as League players on Reddit expressed their apprehensions. Ryan Mireles, Riot’s Lead Gameplay Producer, promptly addressed these concerns, including the future of alternative modes such as Arena, URF, and Nexus Blitz. In his response, he reassured League players not to fret too much. What lies ahead for Riot in the future?

He also alleviated fears of a “content drought” when the modes team undergoes restructuring next year. Mireles stated, “Certainly not,” regarding modes that might be left behind in 2024. “I’m actually increasing my investment in the modes team for next year. The team has more ambitious objectives for the coming year than for the current one.”

Commencing in January, I will be embarking on a new League project, transitioning from the Modes Design Lead position. Modes will continue their work on Arena, bringing back familiar modes, and even introducing new surprises next year. Thanks to everyone who enjoyed Arena; it was one of the highlights of my career.

This development is noteworthy, given Riot’s approach to modes beyond Summoner’s Rift. Many believe that Limited Time Modes (LTM) in League have been lacking in the last five years since Stephen Mortimer, renowned for designing Nexus Blitz and ARAM, departed. One can only hope that the developers uphold their promises and provide top-notch modes like Arena. Arena and URF have filled the void left by the absence of previous modes like Dominion and Twisted Treeline, even though players may have desired these modes more frequently.

A League player even implored Mireles to make Arena a permanent mode, and many quickly concurred that such a decision would undeniably have a lasting positive impact on the freshness of League. The constant grind in regular five-on-five modes like ARAM and the Rift can become monotonous. Arena addresses this by offering a swift and stress-free solution to the fantastic League gameplay, and we all hope it remains available for as long as possible.
