Almost a year after making major changes to the LEC, Riot Games has announced some additional changes to make the league even better for the upcoming season of 2024.

Riot Games has recently disclosed substantial modifications for the upcoming LEC 2024 season. These adjustments aim to enhance the overall competition experience, drawing insights from the past year and considering feedback from fans, teams, and players. The most notable impacts of changes will be on qualification for the League of Legends World Championship and the Mid-Season Invitational. The league will maintain its three-split structure but introduce exciting changes in the Summer Split and Championship Points distribution.

All changes coming to LEC 2024:

The most significant change on the horizon is the integration of the Group Stage and Playoffs into a single bracket for each split. Riot aims to boost clarity and streamline the viewing experience, maintaining the familiar best-of-three and best-of-five series format. Notably, teams won’t face each other again in the Lower Bracket if they’ve already played in the Upper Round 1 – a move geared towards avoiding repetitive matchups.

Championship Points (CP) are also undergoing adjustments. Riot has decided to assign equal points to fifth and sixth, as well as seventh and eighth-place finishers in each split. The stakes and points available for each split are on the rise, with the winner of the Spring split receiving more points than the Winter split. The CP system will be a crucial factor in determining which teams secure spots at the World Championship.

Riot Games is placing more importance on the LEC Summer Split performance. Summer champions are guaranteed a spot at Worlds as the lowest seed. Moreover, second- and third-place teams from the Summer Split are also eligible to play in the LEC Season Finals, regardless of Championship Points. In case of a tie in CP during LEC Season Finals qualification, the team with a higher number of CP earned in the Summer will secure the spot.

For aspiring rookies eyeing the EMEA league, the LEC is raising the minimum age for players participating from 17 to 18 years old. All these changes will be in effect when LEC 2024 kicks off on Saturday, January 13. As the LEC gears up for the 2024 season, fans can anticipate a league that is both familiar and adapted to address the evolving needs and expectations of its community.

Riot’s calculated adjustments aim to strike a balance between competitiveness, sustainability, and the entertainment value of the LEC. The upcoming season holds promise for a league that continues to captivate fans and players alike.
