Old G fail to get promoted to Division I of WEU

Once again, Old G tried and failed to get promoted to Division I of Western Europe. This Dota 2 team is full of former superstars, but something seems to always go wrong. In Tour 3 of DPC 2023, one of their players suddenly decided that he no longer wants to compete. Why? Nobody knows, not even Sebastien “Ceb” Debs.

That player is Adam “Aramis” Moroz. The 22-year-old seems to have been upset by something. Even so, his behavior was a bit unprofessional and ruined Old G’s chances to finish Tour 3 in the top 2. The team ended up forfeiting the match against Nigma Galaxy and then went on to finish the competition with a record of 4 W – 3 L.

Meanwhile, ex-Monaspa and Level UP have five wins and just two defeats. Nigma could equal them in the last match of the league and force a tiebreaker. But no matter what happens there, Old G’s journey is over and will restart in 2024.

The bigger problem is that it will restart in Division II, which means that they will not compete in a Major for around 10 more months. For most pro players, 10 months of no tier-1 LAN events is unbearable. Ceb might be able to motivate himself to continue, but some of his teammates are likely to leave in search of better opportunities.

Why the situation is bad for Old G

Another thing to note here is that in Tour 1 of DPC 2024, WEU’s Division II will feature Team Secret and D1 Hustlers again. And neither of them is easy to beat. If Nigma fail to get promoted at the end of Tour 3, they too will compete in that race, which will make Ceb’s objective very hard to reach.

He probably understands this very well and might even decide to finally quit Dota 2 for good. In theory, he retired a few years ago, and everyone was surprised when he decided to come back at the start of this season. Now he’s probably starting to feel like that was not such a good idea.

Dota 2 is a fun game when you’re ahead. If you’re behind in your understanding of the meta and simply cannot train as hard as the other top teams, the game is painful. You get reminded on a weekly basis of your inadequacies.
