Reports: Team Liquid release mid laner Bjergsen

Søren “Bjergsen” Bjerg, the iconic LCS midlaner, is reportedly leaving Team Liquid after just a year with the North American team. According to multiple reports, the LCS star is willing to consider offers from both the LCS and LEC for 2023.

Before the 2022 Spring Split, Team Liquid revamped its League of Legends roster with the intention of not only dominating the LCS but also making a splash at Worlds. Steven “Hans sama” Lin and Gabril “Bwipo” Rau are just two of the additional European stars that Liquid grabbed along with Bjergsen to form one of the LCS’s most illustrious superteams.

However, the star-studded team was unable to fulfill the standard that so many supporters and experts had set for them due to synergy and communication issues. Although Team Liquid placed third in the Spring Split, the true letdown came in the Summer Split. Team Liquid concluded the Split in fourth place, missing out on the opportunity to represent North America at the 2022 World Championship after suffering a five-game series loss to Evil Geniuses.

Bjergsen performed admirably despite his team’s struggles, sharing the league’s top KDA with EG’s superstar support Vulcan, according to League statistic site, Oracle’s Elixir. During the 2022 Summer Split, he also contributed to slightly over 69 percent of his team’s total kills and had the seventh-most kills in the LCS.

However, as the North American team continues to struggle, Bjergsen may choose to return to the LEC for a fresh start, even though his contract with Team Liquid is set to expire on November 21, 2023. Earlier last month, Hans Sama, who had been the ADC for Team Liquid announced his departure from the team and returned to Europe to compete in LEC. If Bjergsen departs from Liquid, Bjergsen and Hans Sama can once again reunite under a LEC team for the 2023 season.

Will Liquid go for Academy talent?

Although TL’s starting LCS team hasn’t had the best year, the performance of its Academy team was pretty promising in 2022. The Academy team has excellent prospects, as they have won back-to-back Proving Grounds events this year. There is buzz that TL might begin fielding their Academy player for the upcoming LCS Split given that Bjergsen is looking to leave and Jo “CoreJJ” Yong-in’s contract expires at the end of this November.

CoreJJ has been an integral part of its franchise since he arrived in North America, and leaving him can cause some trouble among the fans. Even though Harry “Haeri” Kang, the team’s mid-laner, did not have a strong start to his career, he has been flourishing this year. Haeri has significantly contributed to the team’s success, and there’s a chance he might land a spot on the LCS main squad as well. Although the organization hasn’t yet confirmed any claims, the reports strongly imply that major roster changes should be anticipated in the coming weeks.
