LEC Winter 2024 has begun and after the first week, only one team is unbeaten – SK Gaming. Probably not the one you (or anyone else) expected. But it seems that their roster, despite being full of players who haven’t achieved anything major in their careers, is working really well together.

Another thing that made their three consecutive victories possible is the best-of-one format. If you have a single strategy that works well against your opponent, you can just use it and you won’t have to worry about games 2 and 3.

Still, it’s probably not easy to find such a strategy against the likes of Rogue, MAD Lions KOI, and Fnatic, so SK Gaming surely are very skilled. It remains to be seen if they can maintain the momentum in the coming weeks. As you might expect, the other teams in the league will study their playstyle very carefully and try to find holes in it.

This means that by the time we enter the 3rd or even the 2nd week of LEC Winter 2024, SK Gaming might no longer have the advantage it had in week 1.

At the moment, the league’s standings table looks like this:

  • 1st place: SK Gaming: 3 W – 0 L
  • 2nd place: Fnatic: 2 W – 1 L
  • 3rd place: G2 Esports: 2 W – 1 L
  • 4th place: MAD Lions KOI: 2 W – 1 L
  • 5th place: Team BDS: 2 W – 1 L
  • 6th place: Team Heretics: 2 W – 1 L
  • 7th place: GIANTX: 1 W – 2 L
  • 8th place: Rogue: 1 W – 2 L
  • 9th place: Karmine Corp: 0 W – 3 L
  • 10th place: Team Vitality: 0 W – 3 L

The four big favorites before the start of the Split were G2 Esports, Fnatic, Team Heretics, and GIANTX. So far, only the first three of them delivered.

It’s a bit strange to see a team that has Andrei “Odoamne” Pascu and two South Korean players getting beaten by BDS. But it’s probably just a matter of time until the roster reaches a deeper level of cohesion and everyone’s on the same page.

Last season, Odoamne had a nightmare run with Excel Esports. In both splits, he finished last in the league. This year, he probably hopes to do much better. But it won’t be easy in this league.

The team with the highest number of superstars is G2 Esports, followed by Team Heretics. The battle for the number 1 position should, in theory, take place between them. But we’ll have to wait and see what week 2 brings.
