On Tuesday, April 18, Blizzard Entertainment, the developer of Overwatch 2, announced on its official blog regarding Blizzard’s Defense Matrix Initiative, stating that more than 100,000 players have been banned for using cheats or toxic cheats.

Recall that Blizzard’s Defense Matrix Initiative is a program that Blizzard implemented in Overwatch 2 to encourage inclusive and, above all, clean gameplay. This means that it behaves like an Anti-Cheat that detects toxic behavior and, of course, cheaters and permanently bans them from the game.

There is no doubt that this program has been a success, according to what Blizzard has published. The problem of cheaters in online multiplayer games will likely never be solved, as this has been our bread and butter. However, the fact that they are banning players for toxicity is undoubtedly a great move for the developers.

Blizzard reveals that it has banned more than 100,000 Overwatch 2 players

In the article published on Blizzard’s official blog, the company reveals that they have managed to ban more than 100,000 players for cheating and toxicity thanks to Blizzard’s Defense Matrix Initiative. In other words, all players who used hacks to gain an advantage in games and those who allied with cheaters to achieve victories were banned.

In the blog, the developers indicate that they took a lot of measures to deal with cheaters and cheaters taking advantage of hacks to win games in Overwatch 2. As we have mentioned, the problem of cheaters is very complicated to disappear, and, in addition, it is Overwatch 2, a free-to-play game.

And it is that players were already using cheats to win games just days after the game’s launch in October 2022. This is not only in Overwatch; it happens in any online title, but developers must take action to combat it.

Blizzard’s Defense Matrix Initiative is a success, according to developers

This initiative on the part of Blizzard brought with it a feature that, without a doubt, are much more advanced and allows to combat cheaters and toxic players more effectively. Concerning the latter, the program includes a new algorithm to detect toxic behavior through voice chat.

In its extensive press release, Blizzard mentions that this tool has worked well in recent months. However, according to the developers, players do not notice how communicating with their teammates can affect the game’s development. Due to this bad behavior, players receive a warning and immediately improve their attitude.

Finally, Blizzard mentions that they continue to study different ways to continue detecting cheaters and toxic players and, in the same way, to ensure that players have a good quality of life within the servers. In addition, they point out that they are trying to encourage players to advance with their favorite characters to improve their skills and simultaneously receive rewards.
