In a move that perhaps comes as little surprise following what has been a hugely disappointing season for the North American organisation, Immortals have made the decision to release Johnny “Altec” Ru, Austin “Gate” Yu, Paul “sOAZ” Boyer and Jeremy “Eika” Valdenaire from its LCS roster. Along with this, coach Adrien “GoToOne” Picard will also depart the team, actions which follow Immortals finishing last in the 2020 LCS Summer Split.

A 4-14 record meant that changes were almost inevitable, however with the team now being without its leading top laner in sOAZ, ADC Altec, support Gate and mid lainer Eika, perhaps more questions remain unanswered than answered. Having entered the League of Legends scene back in 2016, Immortals only made waves in the LCS following the purchase of Infinite Esports and Entertainment, meaning that they took the franchise spot formally held by OpTic Gaming.

How the Immortals Roster Will Now Look

Jungler Jake Kevin “Xmithie” Puchero will continue his role, with the former Team Liquid star having been named as the LCS Finals MVP in 2018, while he is a 6x LCS Champion. The veteran will now find himself on an Immortals roster alongside the likes of top laner Kieran “Allorim” Logue, mid-laner David “Insanity” Challe, bot-laner Apollo “Apollo” Price, support Nickolas “Hakuho” Surgent and fellow jungler Nicholas “Potluck” Pollock, in what is a roster that perhaps does not inspire confidence.

Will Recent Changes Turn Around the Fortunes of Immortals?

Immortals entered the 2020 LCS Spring Split short of confidence following an extended period without any form of consistency, with the team eventually finishing in 8th position following a defeat against Dignitas in a tiebreaker round. The poor performances continued into the Summer Split, with a host of defeats in the opening weeks of the event.

With a number of months until the beginning of the 2021 season, we could well see yet more changes to the Immortals roster beforehand, with Xmithie having already been linked with a move to another LCS team. It also remains to be seen as to what the future holds for those who have been let go, with Altec, Gate, sOAZ, Eika and coach GoToOne now likely to be searching for new teams.
