In his first year as a tier-1 professional CS:GO player, Ilya “m0NESY” Osipov received a spot in the top 20 CS:GO players of the season. HLTV put him quite high on that list, ranking him seventh. Some will say that he deserved to be in the top five.

It’s clear at this point that m0NESY will be, in just a few years, almost as good as Aleksandr “s1mple” Kostyliev. The 17-year-old is extremely well-versed in CS:GO and can play anything, anywhere.

M0NESY’s 2022 season in CS:GO

M0NESY had a great start in 2022 and managed to qualify for the Grand Final of IEM Katowice. But unfortunately for him and G2 Esports, FaZe Clan were already exceptionally strong at that point. The match ended with a 3-0 victory in favor of FaZe.

However, even in defeat, G2 proved to be a formidable opponent. Every single map was close. The first two required overtime rounds to conclude and the third finished 16-14. The match was heartbreaking to watch as a G2 fan but it showed the potential of m0NESY and the rest of the squad.

In the Grand Final, the youngster was the second-best player on his team, ending with 88 kills and 81 deaths.

After this good start, G2 struggled for the next 9 months. They finished 9th-11th at PGL Major Antwerp, fifth-sixth at IEM Dallas, third-fourth at BLAST Premier: Spring Finals, 9th-12th at IEM Cologne, third-fourth at ESL Pro League Season 16, and then failed to qualify for the IEM Rio Major.

The fact that they missed the second CS:GO Major of the year was by far the most disappointing result of the team in 2022. But from October until December, G2 Esports trained hard and changed their play style radically.

In December, CS:GO featured the last $1 million tournament of the year, BLAST Premier: World Final. And it was incredible to watch.

G2’s start was weak. They lost against FaZe Clan (2-1) despite winning the first map. M0NESY’s performance was terrible: 0.94 / -2. But immediately after, his team had to play against the winners of IEM Rio Major and he was unbelievable: 1.94 / +36!

In particular, the second map was a masterclass: 1-16 after a 0-15 first half. M0NESY finished this map with a rating 2.0 of 2.23 and a K-D score of 22-4. Rarely do we see such impeccable performances at this level.

G2 then went on to win the tournament, defeating opponents like Team Vitality, FaZe Clan, and Team Liquid along the way.
