Street Fighter 6 has made history and now announce its first millionaire at the Capcom Cup X tournament. Taiwanese player Wang “Uma327” Uma Yan won a USD 1,000,000 prize in a nine-day event at the Avalon in Hollywood.

An Underdog’s Victory

Uma had an incredible climb to the top. During the Street Fighter V era, he had received relatively little attention outside Asia at first. But when Uma heard about the massive USD 1,000,000 prize pool for Capcom Cup X, he decided to go all in and grind like never before.

Without a job, no sponsor and only USD 300 to his name, Uma headed to California on his own to prove his worth. He steamed through the tournament undeterred, thrashing veteran players and crowd favorites alike to establish himself as a fighting game underdog.

The One Million Dollar Character

Uma’s dedication to the character Jury was one of the main reasons he became so successful. Though her stock fell to many, Uma still believed in her potential. His knowledge of Jury and his ability to test her to the limit helped him win.

A New Era for Fighting Games

The scale of the prize pool offered by Capcom makes Uma a millionaire while also setting a new standard for fighting game tournaments. However, Capcom President 1and1 COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto stated that Uma would not be the last “fighting game millionaire” the company would create, with Capcom Cup XI also slated to win USD 1,000,000 in 2024.

The Future of Street Fighter 6

Following his historic victory, Uma talked about the balance of the game and what he anticipated of it. He said he’d like to see characters like Ibuki and Makoto come on the roster and felt the balance was “good enough” at the time of Capcom Cup X, with only minor tweaks needed for characters like JP and Luke.

Looking Ahead

With this new found wealth Uma hopes to keep his winnings for a lifetime. For the time being, he added “I’m just going to play.” This passion and commitment to the game was certainly his greatest achievement.

Street Fighter makers Takayuki Nakayama and Shuhei Matsumoto stated they had been thrilled with the result and had been keen to see much more talent come out from the tournament. They hope this historic event will give rise to more tournaments – big and small – and continue to promote Street Fighter 6.

Conclusion

Gaming superstar Uma has become a millionaire thanks to winning Capcom Cup X, but more importantly it has thrust fighting games into a new era of respect and legitimacy. As the community celebrates this milestone, expectations for next year’s Capcom Cup XI are undoubtedly high, with young players inspired by Uma’s underdog story.
