The long-anticipated Overwatch 2 is here, however, yesterday’s launch of the game was not without problems. While players were excited to finally try the game, the overload of serves, which is often an issue on release days of new game titles, caused long waiting times and frustration.
And the problems don’t end there. Amid gamers complaining about long queues, server crashes, and bugs, Blizzard President Mike Ybarra claims the company is dealing with a mass DDoS attack that just so happens to coincide with the first day of the highly anticipated Overwatch sequel. After the queue times were already very high due to Blizzard’s WoW Classic Wrath of the Lichking launch, the other Blizzard game is now also affected.
Mass DDoS attack
Since the launch of Overwatch 2 Early Access PvP on October 4, there have been numerous complaints about high latency and disconnecting, with players claiming they have been encountering continuous errors when trying to get into the game.
Following the complications, Ybarra claims that Blizzard was the victim of a mass DDoS attack on its servers, which is placing even more burden on the already overloaded servers
Unfortunately we are experiencing a mass DDoS attack on our servers. Teams are working hard to mitigate/manage. This is causing a lot of drop/connection issues. https://t.co/4GwrfHEiBE

Fans are skeptical
This post came just 45 minutes after he tweeted that the team was working hard on the Overwatch 2 server issues. Based on that, many players who have suffered from a lack of Overwatch content over the past few weeks are quite skeptical about these claims.
While many reactions to Ybarra’s tweet expressed frustration and distrust, some fans showed support. Twitch streamer Brandon “Seagull” Larned, who got lucky with the server connection for a little while before getting kicked almost immediately after commenting, said he doesn’t think Blizzard would lie about something like that. But others are not convinced. Of course, there are also plenty of memes that make fun of the server problems.

The second DDoS attack
While the official Blizzard Twitter account hasn’t tweeted about a DDoS attack yet, the data from downdetector.com indicate that other Blizzard games, including World of Warcraft and Diablo, were facing higher numbers of outages than usual approximately 30 minutes before Ybarra reported about the attack.
Today early in the morning, a report about another DDoS attack was tweeted by Overwatch 2 game Director Aaron Keller.
We’re steadily making progress on server issues and stability, as well as working through a second DDoS attack. We’re all hands on deck and will continue to work throughout the night. Thank you for your patience – we’ll share more info as it becomes available.

Players who want to launch Blizzard games will have to wait out the attack and any other server issues while the team tries to fix the servers and get the games running again.
