Hogwarts Legacy Set to Surpass Modern Warfare 3 as 2023’s Best-Selling Game

Hogwarts Legacy, a standalone, single-player title, has taken the number one spot in the latest rankings for 2023’s top-selling games, according to the latest sales rankings. The game, which was released early in the year, has sold over 20 million copies and is currently outselling both Modern Warfare 3 and Diablo IV.

Despite some polarizing opinions across social media when it was first released, Hogwarts Legacy has surpassed all expectations in 2023 and managed to overtake a number of other popular titles, including Game Awards favorites. It even managed to beat sales of 2022’s top award winner, Elden Ring.

Hogwarts Legacy is more popular than Modern Warfare 3 and Diablo IV

It’s worth noting that Modern Warfare 3 only dropped last month, while Hogwarts Legacy has had all year to accrue sales. Still, it’s unusual to see a game that’s basically done and dusted rank so highly among the top games sold at year’s end, especially as there has been no additional DLC announced for it to date.

Modern Warfare 3’s initial sales haven’t quite eclipsed Hogwarts Legacy’s year-to-date sales. However, it’s uncertain whether Hogwarts Legacy will stay on top to end the year.

Hogwarts Legacy did not receive a single nomination at The Game Awards

It has successfully surpassed several other well-known titles, including those favored at the Game Awards.

The game is available across consoles and PC, and it’s likely receiving a bit of a boost in sales at the end of the year. Still, 20 million copies thus far is nothing to sneer at, even with help from Santa.

Hogwarts, which was not nominated in any category at this year’s Game Awards, has also managed to surpass the sales figures of the 2022 top award winner, Elden Ring. The reason for this achievement raises questions, and some speculate it may be related to the controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling. However, this is purely speculative.

Baldur’s Gate 3, the game of the year winner, hasn’t made the list for top 20 games sold yet. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that this particular list doesn’t track digital sales, of which BG3 has certainly sold plenty.

Hogwarts Legacy’s impressive sales throughout the first year of its release are certainly interesting, and it will be fascinating to see if it can maintain its top spot until the end of the year.
