According to reports, former OpTic Gaming & Unicorns of Love manager Romain Bigeard is to be named as G2 Esports’ new League of Legends general manager. Having spent the past three years working as Business Development Manager for Riot Games, the eccentric personality has now seemingly chosen the next step in his career.

During what has been a period of change for G2’s League of Legends team, Dot Esports has reported that Bigeard is set to be the latest new arrival for the organization. Riot announced the departure of Bigeard from their European upper management team on October 12 through an internal memo, with the German having also worked with on-stage talent during his time with the developer.

Why Bigeard is Returning to League of Legends

Bigeard will be returning to a professional League team for the first time since October 2018, when he left OpTic Gaming. Upon joining G2, Bigeard would reunite with former Riot boss, Alban Dechelotte. Dechelotte is G2’s general manager, having gained experience as Riot’s head of business development in Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

The task facing Bigeard is significant, with G2 currently being part way through a significant rebuild. The org is looking to offload three top players, along with some of its coaching team, with not long remaining until the new season gets underway.

Why it is a Period of Change for G2

CEO and founder Carlos “Ocelote” Rodriguez Santiago recently gave an insight into G2’s future, confirming that Rekkles, Mikyx and Wunder were available for transfer, along with head coach Grabbz and strategic coach Nelson. Adding to this, Ocelote mentioned that G2 would “look to replace the rest of the support staff”.

Jonathan “Taco Storm” Singh, G2’s current GM, has been unusually quiet of late, adding to speculation that he is soon to be replaced. Meanwhile, head analyst Christopher “Duffman” Duff and scout analyst Luciana “AngelArcher” Nadrag have both confirmed that they are on the search for new homes.

Bigeard is one of the most popular personalities in the League of Legends scene. He is known for his cosplay, having dressed up at some of the biggest events in recent years. Bigeard was in charge of OpTic Gaming during their first season in the LCS back in 2018, where they finished in 9th position in the Spring and 7th in the summer. Meanwhile, Bigeard’s managerial career started with Unicorns of Love, alongside head coach Sheepy, as well as his father and CEO, Jos Mallant.
