The vacations are over in the Rocket League competitive scene. Last weekend, the RLCS also kicked off the 2023 season in all regions worldwide.

In North America, teams returned from winter break with a mission to lift the championship trophy in the first tournament of the year. While the first NA Split brought some surprises, in the end, we had a more than familiar sight for everyone, the victory of Gen.G Mobil1 Racing.

After finishing the 2022 season with an excellent fall win and the Major, Gen-G Mobil1 Racing continues to prove their excellent form at the start of 2023. Indeed, very few teams in NA and the world can stop this incredible lineup of players.

Gen.G wins Winter Regional

Gen.G had some debates when entering Rocket League ahead of the 2022 season. However, their lineup of Jack “ApparentlyJack” Benton and Joseph “noly” Kidd, and rookie Nick “Chronic” Iwanski gave it their all to take the win in this RLCS NA Winter Open.

In the Group Stage of the first tournament, Gen.G only succumbed to Complexity Gaming. Then, in the playoffs Brackets, they crushed Akrew (3-1) and FURIA Esports (4-1) to qualify for the tournament’s semifinals.

There they met G2 Esports, whom they defeated crushingly with a score of 4-0 to qualify for the grand final and face the only team that had stood up to them, Complexity Gaming.

The Grand Final had a completely different outcome than the Group Stage match. Gen.G proved their defeat in the previous match was just a slip-up, as they crushed Complexity Gaming 4-1.

This grand final was the most international in NA history. The only North American player was Chronic, on behalf of Gen.G, as the other players were from England, Spain, Argentina, and Chile.

In the final, there was only a brief sigh from Complexity, who, however, should be satisfied with their tournament.

Surprises in the tournament

As in every tournament, regardless of the esports it is, teams always provide some pleasant surprises, while others are simply disappointing. One of the disappointing stories of this tournament was that of OpTic Gaming. The famous “Green Wall” team was eliminated in the Group Stage, continuing their poor performance in the Split.

Dignitas, on the other hand, showed an incredible level of play. Unfortunately, they shared the group with Gen.G and Complexity, so they only managed to finish in third place. However, they managed to reach the tournament’s semifinals, leaving teams such as Version1 and Spacestation Gaming in the way.

On the other hand, FaZe Clan, one of the best teams in NA, had a disappointing start to the season. They were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs.
