Gen.G, an organization that has found little to no success over its venture in Valorant, is finally having their patience and commitment paying off. The South Korean squad has become the first Grand Finalists in VCT Masters Madrid after taking down Sentinels in the Upper Bracket Final.

Map 1 – Split

The series started with the map pick of Sentinels: Split. Gen.G was off to a flying start after winning the first pistol round, but Sentinels could win a force buy to strike back. However, with high combined impact from Meteor and Munchkin, Gen.G could convincingly take the first half 8-4.

After winning the second pistol round, the Pacific roster looked to seal the game quickly, which they did after a 13-5 victory. T3xture’s Raze shined with 263 Average Combat Score and four opening kills.

Map 2 – Lotus

Sentinels would start on the offense on the second map, Lotus. Despite Gen.G winning the third pistol round of the series, Sentinels answered back by winning three straight thanks to a force-buy victory. Still, thanks to clutch plays from Meteor, Gen.G could salvage their defensive half 5-7 in such an attacker-sided map.

Gen.G continued winning pistol rounds, winning the second one on Lotus, but after Zellsis stood strong on defense, Sentinels posted six consecutive rounds to win the map 13-7.

Map 3 – Breeze

A decider was needed to separate the two first seeds of the top two regions, with Breeze as the battleground. Unfortunately, we did not get an intense third map to close such an anticipated series.

Gen.G took the fifth pistol round of the series and converted three straight to lead 4-0. Sentinels could pick up a round, but it was short-lived success as Gen.G won four more rounds. The hald ended 9-3, and North American fans were praying that the “9-3 curse” would kick in.

Unfortunately, the South Korean superteam won every single pistol round in the series, and quickly shut Sentinels down 13-3 to win the series.

The top performer of the series was undoubtedly Meteor, who finished the match 56/35/15 and a 1.36 rating. On the other side, TenZ was heavily underperforming, only managing a KDA of 20/45/30 and a 0.57 rating.

Still, the Sentinels are not out yet, and will play against the winner of LOUD vs. Paper Rex for a chance at a rematch with Gen.G in the Grand Final.

With this 2-1 victory over the boys in red, Gen.G claimed the first Grand Final spot at VCT Masters Madrid. Munchkin had participated in numerous international tournaments, but his best placing was 9-10th place. This is the deepest run he’s ever made, and with how Gen.G is playing right now, the first seed of the Pacific region is projecting their first tournament win.
