FURIA Esports and The MongolZ started the Copenhagen Major with terrible results.

Both teams lost their first two matches and seemed to have no chance of qualifying for the second stage. But they proved all of us wrong by winning three consecutive matches.

FURIA’s Comeback

FURIA lost the first match against their Brazilian rivals, Legacy. Despite winning the first half of Ancient 7 – 5, the final score was 13 – 16 for the team led by coldzera, FalleN’s former teammate.

This defeat sent FURIA down a dark path. In theory, the comeback should have happened in round 2 because the opponent, Lynn Vision Gaming, was nowhere near the skill level of the Brazilian squad. But FURIA lost this match as well, 9 – 13. This was LVG’s only victory of the tournament.

For FURIA, everything looked hopeless at this point and there was no one to blame but themselves. We don’t know what happened after this defeat, but it’s clear that the players entered a completely different mindset in their next three matches.

The comeback started with a victory against KOI, who fought valiantly but did not stand a chance to win against FalleN’s team. Both yuurih and arT played a fantastic match, ending with an ADR of 100+. The scores were 13 – 6 on Overpass and 13 – 9 on Vertigo.

The 4th match was played against an opponent that should have eliminated FURIA with ease. ENCE finished IEM Katowice in the top 6 and their IGL, gla1ve, is one of the most accomplished players in Counter-Strike, having won multiple Majors with Astralis. However, his team was in poor shape at this event. The scores were 13 – 8 on Mirage and 13 – 9 on Ancient.

This time, it was chelo’s turn to shine: 40 – 21. KSCERATO also played well, finishing the match with a rating 2.0 of 1.41.

FURIA’s final match was against SAW, who started PGL Major Copenhagen with two consecutive victories and then somehow managed to lose three times in a row. No doubt, this was the result of their lack of experience and the pressure they felt.

FURIA took advantage of the situation and won relatively easily: 13 – 7 on Vertigo and 13 – 7 on Ancient. This time, out of nowhere, FalleN surprised everyone with one of the best performances of his career. His individual scores were 45 – 20 / 107.7 / 1.68. This was a monumental achievement and a masterclass from one of the most accomplished Brazilian players.

Thanks to this victory, FURIA completed the comeback and will get the chance to compete against the likes of Team Spirit and FaZe Clan in the second stage of the Copenhagen Major.

MongolZ’s Comeback

The MongolZ looked impressive in the weeks that preceded the Copenhagen Major, so everyone was shocked when they started the tournament with two consecutive defeats.

Their first match, against Eternal Fire, ended poorly for understandable reasons. The Turkish team is very experienced and ended up qualifying with a record of 3 W – 1 L. But the second match, played against ECSTATIC, should have gone better. In the end, they lost that one too: 13 – 10 on Nuke.

This was the point at which the real struggle for tournament survival started for The MongolZ. And they proved themselves to be a very strong team.

Their 3rd match was against AMKAL and they won. But it was a nerve-wrecking experience for the fans. The scores were 13 – 2 on Nuke, 8 – 13 on Mirage, and 13 – 10 on Inferno. The fate of the match was decided on the second half of the 3rd map, which is a very stressful way to win. The man who carried The MongolZ the most was bLitz. His record was 51 – 36.

In the 4th match of the Copenhagen Major, The MongolZ had their first easy battle of the tournament. Lynn Vision Gaming didn’t look capable of winning against them. And indeed, the match was relatively one-sided: 13 – 8 on Ancient and 13 – 6 on Anubis. Techno had a really good performance (36 – 25), carrying his team to victory.

Thanks to this result, The MongolZ had the opportunity to qualify for the second stage of the tournament. But to do that, they had to beat coldzera’s team, Legacy. And few people thought they could do it. In the end, they won with ease: 13 – 9 on Ancient and 13 – 6 on Anubis.

This victory was obtained largely because Legacy’s players were put under a lot of pressure and couldn’t cope with it. Apart from coldzera and to some extent b4rtiN, everyone struggled. The man of the match was mzinho, whose 36 – 24 score was sufficient to give The MongolZ the chance to compete against the best of the best teams in the world.
