ESL Kuala Lumpur 2023 started with very strong performances from Team Falcons and Tundra Esports, who won their first two matches. The rest of the teams either did ok or struggled on day 1 of the tournament.

In group A, for instance, Azure Ray and Blacklist International had one win and one draw. BetBoom Team and Gaimin Gladiators had two draws. Team Secret and Wawitas Sagazes had one draw and one defeat.

In group B, apart from Falcons and Tundra, everyone suffered at least one defeat. G2.iG won against LGD Gaming but lost against Tundra. Team Liquid won against 9Pandas but lost against Falcons. 9Pandas and LGD Gaming lost both of their matches, so it will be hard for them to recover.

Teams are made up of just six teams, which means that every competitor gets to play five best-of-two matches. Winning the first two is absolutely terrible. Winning the first two pretty much guarantees a spot in the playoffs.

Of course, it’s not the same thing to start in the upper bracket or the lower bracket. So for the strong teams, the real battle is for the top two positions and not necessarily for survival. But considering how many strong teams compete in each group, survival will be a real issue even for some of the best teams in the tournament.

Day 1 conclusions

Day 1 of ESL One Kuala Lumpur showed us just how dramatically the meta has changed since The International. So far, the scariest heroes have been Slardar and Zeus. Slardar was picked 6 times and won 5 games. Zeus was picked 5 times and won 4 games.

The most picked hero on day 1 was Grimstroke. For some reason, everyone loves and fears that support. That’s why he got banned 12 times and picked 11 times. His win rate was 64%, which is very high given the circumstances.

Tusk, on the other hand, was also highly contested (10 picks, 6 bans) but his win rate was only 40%.

Muerta failed miserably on day 1, getting picked 7 times and winning just 2 games. Weaver did considerably better. He was picked 7 times and won 4 games. He also received 11 bans, which is a sign that a lot of teams fear him.

To everyone’s surprise, Lina was highly contested. She was picked 7 times and received 10 bans. Her win rate on day 1 was 57% or 4 W – 3 L.
