Dragon’s Dogma 2 is Capcom’s action RPG sequel and over 10 years down the road it is finally here. A rich and detailed fantasy universe to explore, a unique pawn system, and various playable vocations (character classes) – Dragon’s Dogma 2 can be intimidating for newcomers to the series.

Luckily, game director Hideaki Itsuno has some tips for new Dragon’s Dogma players on what are the best-starting jobs. Itsuno previously told GamesRadar + that those just jumping into the action RPG should try the Archer or Thief vocations instead.

Archer Vocation – for FPS/Third-Person Shooter Lovers

Itsuno also recommends playing the Archer vocation in Dragon’s Dogma 2 for players with first- or third-person shooter backgrounds. Accurate aim pays off for an archer as they deal more damage to enemies.

Itsuno added that “if you’re an FPS or third-person shooter player and you have great aim then the Archers could be the right fit for you since the more you can aim the much better you will do with that ranged character.” “I think it’ll introduce you to the game early on.”

The Archer supports ranged combat with a variety of bow types, making it ideal for those adept at lining up headshots from afar. The playstyle of this vocation may be familiar to those used to sniping or bowing in shooters and other RPGs.

Close Quarters Combat Experts – Thief Vocation

However, Itsuno does recommend the Thief vocation to Dragon’s Dogma 2 newcomers who want close combat and action similar to games such as Elden Ring. “If you’ve been playing more close combat games and you are playing the roll dodge type game where you roll dodge to dodge into enemy range before they counterattack, then the Thief is definitely for that type of player,” he added.

As a thin, dagger-wielding race, Thieves are adept at dodging blows and striking quickly from stealth. Positioning is everything, similar to the souls-like combat many are familiar with. The Thief could make a good starting vocation for those who like the thrill of getting close to big damage while still being mobile.

But Itsuno encourages new players to just go with whatever vocation appeals to them – the Fighter, Mage or one of Dragon’s Dogma 2’s other talents aside from Archer and Thief. The attraction of the game is the freedom to experiment.

Personal Vocation Preferences of Director

Itsuno also revealed his normal party set-up while playing Dragon’s Dogma 2. He chooses the versatile Warfarer profession for his main playable character, the Arisen. This advanced class allows abilities of all vocations to be mixed.

“My current setup is I’ll have three pawns as Sorcerers and for the Arisen themselves I will use the Warfarer class which is one where you can do different things with different Vocations,” Itsuno said.

However, he notes there is no single optimal party composition, as different scenarios demand varied tactics. “This party structure I’ve made is great for bosses, but we can be totally wiped out by a pack of wolves at the same time. So there isn’t necessarily one right answer to how to win every time – just think about your party structure before you enter the battlefield.

How to Overcome Dogma’s Obstacles

Despite Dragon’s Dogma 2 getting good reviews citing the ambitious open world and tricky fighting system, several reviewers have called the game a dud. Microtransactions in the USD 70 title caused controversy, although Capcom says many of the paid benefits can be obtained through regular play.

A portion of the player base has also expressed frustration with performance issues, a single save slot limitation and other issues. But Capcom has promised to address bugs, stability issues and player feedback.

But despite the challenges, Dragon’s Dogma 2 was an enormous success after release, outperforming 200,000 concurrent Steam players in a Capcom game. With a dedicated community exploring Gransys, the game looks set to continue to grow its fan base.

For those just starting their journey, following Itsuno’s advice and trying the Archer or Thief vocation could be a fun, easy-going start. Snipping foes from afar to sneaking in for savage dagger strikes, these two careers provide gameplay experiences many will find available instantly depending on their preference.

Itsuno reminds players that at the end of the day feeling free to play is the key to unlocking Dragon’s Dogma 2’s range of combat system. Over a dozen different vocations to unlock and customize, each player can ultimately forge their own path through the gritty fantasy world of Gransys. It’s a demanding journey, but few RPGs provide as immersive and rewarding an experience for those willing to dig in.
