Antarctic Peninsula KOTH the new Overwatch 2 map

The new control map for Overwatch 2 Season 3 is the Antarctic Peninsula, where for the first time, you can shoot penguins. Plenty of things for players to engage in when Overwatch 2 is released, including the sequel’s first King of the Hill map.

To snatch the objective from their opponents, players will have to traverse the snow, icy caverns, and abandoned ships of the Antarctic Peninsula, which makes its debut in Season 3.

History

The Antarctic Peninsula is one of many Overwatch 2 maps related to specific heroes or story-based themes.

Antarctica is related to Mei’s journey this time, as seen in the animated short Rise and Shine.

Developer comments

In an interview, the developers of the new Overwatch map comment on what players can expect.

Overwatch lead narrative designer Jurgens-Fyhrie commented:

“You can see hints about what Mei and her team were trying to find there. Maybe there are some sort of secrets. Maybe you can find something on the map that will tell you something even more exciting about the story to come.”

In addition, he said that players could witness the Overwatch icebreaker ship that tried to save Mei and her companions. But which ultimately failed.

The map has a lot of history, so we assume it may be present in the next PvE campaign later this year; but the game developers do not confirm this assumption.

The art director, Dion Rogers, only said:

Sections of the Antarctic Peninsula

The Antarctic Peninsula will be divided into three distinct sections. Teams will have to fight to take control, just like in the other KOTH maps.

In the first section, there is an icebreaker ship that Overwatch intends to use to rescue Mei and her companions before they, too, become trapped. After that, players can fight through tunnels and an engine room as they progress toward the objective.

The second section is a subway mine with a sublevel where researchers were trying to find new properties. Despite being underground, there is a drill and many verticalities, which might make it difficult for some players to get their hands on the objective.

Fans can witness what Mei and her companions were doing in the labs in the third location, which focuses on the Ecopoint region of Antarctica. Although this part is more of a “straightforward” checkpoint with numerous flanking options, there is an intriguing platform just above it.

Snow angels, fishing, and penguin shooters added to Overwatch

Just as Ilios has basketball hoops and Busan has a karaoke machine, the Antarctic Peninsula has fun exchanges.

The icy map will have fishing holes where players can shoot and fish. On the other hand, Penguins can be shot at, but they will never die; they dodge them like a Neo from the Matrix.

In addition, the map brings other things to keep players entertained, such as making designs in the snow as they move over it.
