The LCK experienced a completely unexpected and, above all, dramatic twist in the grand final of the Spring Split 2023. What was practically an assured victory for T1, who dominated the entire Split from start to finish, ended up being the consecration of Gen.G for the second consecutive Split.

There is no doubt that Gen.G demonstrated that they have cold blood for this kind of match and ended with Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok’s illusions of winning his eleventh title in the LCK.

We could see a bewildered T1 without knowing how they lost a championship that was practically in their hands.

LCK crowned champion of the LCK Spring Split 2023

In a grand finale that seemed to favor Faker’s team, Gen.G pulled out all the stops and respected their status as reigning champions to claim an excellent 3-1 victory.

With this victory, Gen.G defended their title of champions obtained in the LCK Summer 2022, where they also crushed T1 with a 3-0.

T1, a three-time world champion, had shown some flaws in their series against KT Rolster in the semifinals. However, their 3-1 win over Gen.G in the Upper Bracket finals seemed to have put them behind them. On the other hand, the team that left behind each of the mistakes they made throughout the Split was Gen.g, who vindicated themselves with their fans after they were crushed by T1 in the Upper Bracket.

The best player of the grand final match was Kim “Peyz” Su-hwan, who took the MVP award.

Doran: Gen.G’s hero

While 17-year-old rookie Peyz won the MVP, there is no doubt that Gen.G’s uncapped hero in this grand final was Choi “Doran” Hyeon-joon.

On many occasions, Doran has been labeled as the least consistent player in the Gen.G. lineup. However, the 22-year-old shut their mouth in this grand final match against T1.

Gen.G Top Laner managed to give a lecture to Choi “Zeus” Woo-Je, during each of the grand final matches. However, Doran, without a doubt, was the one who made a difference for his team in this match and, consequently, led them to victory.

Doran mainly used Gragas, a champion he used perfectly to contain and completely nullify Zeus. However, the Top Laner’s initiator kills were fundamental, especially in the first two maps, as they gave a big blow to Faker and his guys.

T1 and his attempt to wake up

Watching how Doren was crushing Zeus in the Top Lane and Gen.G took the first win in the series, they decided to give Zeus Sion to focus every resource on Lee “Gumayusi” Min-hyeong. But, unlike Zeus, T1’s shooter was at his best and got T1 within 1-2.

Peyz, the executioner of T1 on the fourth map

In the fourth map, Peyz took the baton of his team and started to tear T1 apart little by little and mainly after stealing Jinx’s pick. The 17-year-old Gen.G rookie shined in every way to score nine kills and put the championship crown on his team for the second consecutive Split.

With this win, there is no doubt that T1 must pull out all the stops at MSI to try and get a crown at this point in the season. In addition, this would serve as a boost for the upcoming Summer Split.
