Sony is playing a significant role in Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard King. Or, to speak more correctly, Microsoft is experiencing difficulties in completing this deal. Of course, the authorities, who must approve or disapprove the deal, will ultimately decide what happens. But they are considering Sony’s point of view because it has made it clear that it opposes it.

It would be unfair not to understand the Japanese company’s position. Note that some of the most popular PlayStation games, such as those in the Call of Duty series, carry the Activision-Blizzard logo.

So the possibility that some of them could end up being exclusive to Microsoft’s Xbox and PC is a grave threat to the platform’s ability to compete. Of course, we’re not sure of the exact impact this would have on Sony’s console sales, but we can at least predict that it would be noticeable from the start.

Microsoft has committed to keeping Activision-Blizzard and Sony’s contracts as they currently stand. In turn, they have also committed to expanding the scope of the company’s games beyond the current release dates.

Sony buys Ballistic Moon studio

We now know from PitchBook that Sony has bought Ballistic Moon a studio created by former employees of Supermassive Games. They worked on the creation of Until Dawn, among other titles. We’re not talking about a big studio, but it suggests that the company will continue to add to its already considerable portfolio.

On the other hand, regulators continue to tackle a process they have shown they do not understand, with Microsoft and Sony attacking each other in a brutal confrontation.

Buying Sony

It should be noted that this is not Sony’s first acquisition since Microsoft and Activision-Blizzard announced their plans. Just two weeks after the announcement, Sony initiated the purchase of Bungie. The process was finalized with the approval of all regulators and without interference from Microsoft. While Bungie is not as big as Activision-Blizzard, it is still another acquisition by the company that is the market leader in video game consoles.

This means that while Sony is working to prevent Microsoft from buying Activision-Blizzard, at the same time, it is acquiring studios. This is seen as part of a strategy to control the market, just as Microsoft is accused of doing actively and passively. However, it seems unlikely that the Redmond-based company will not consider responding to this new operation.
