Seth “Scump” Abne slammed skill-based matchmaking on a recent episode of The OpTic Podcast, calling it the “worst” in the history of the franchise.

Even while Modern Warfare 3, the most recent Call of Duty game, has won over some fans, skill-based matching is still a big issue in the community. Since its release, Modern Warfare 3’s skill-based matchmaking system has generated a lot of discussion due to how intense the matchmaking seems to be with some players emphasizing that the system has changed completely.

Although SBMM has been a part of the COD series since Modern Warfare in 2007, its accuracy has increased with time. The matchmaking system tries to pair you up with players of similar skill so that you won’t join in with less-skilled opponents and wipe them out. But in reality, a lot of people have claimed throughout the years that it may be very restricting, squeezing you into stuffy, steamy lobbies with little opportunity for breathing. This has happened once more in 2023, with Modern Warfare 3 taking the stage, though it’s possibly more prevalent than before.

Scump take on MW3’s skill-based matchmaking

Once again, the matchmaking controversy erupted, and former professional player Seth “Scump” Abner weighed in with his opinions. In the most recent episode of The OpTic Podcast, Scump—possibly the most famous Call of Duty professional player ever—launched an attack against skill-based matching. He said that the SBMM felt more intense than it has in past years, and he believed that this may be because of a dwindling player count.

He emphasized how difficult it is for him to use less potent weapons for camo challenges since he is frequently paired against really proficient players who use potent load-outs like MCWs and Rival-9s. Even though he is a professional player, he made it clear that dealing with such a powerful SBMM is annoying, and other users of Twitter repeated his comments by sharing similar experiences and system concerns. There’s a chance that once Warzone’s new Urzikstan map launches on December 6, MW3’s rigorous skill-based matching will loosen up after the player base is more dispersed.

As the community eagerly awaits potential adjustments, Scump’s insights, shaped by years of experience, continue to hold significant weight, adding to the ongoing conversation surrounding the impact of skill-based matchmaking in the Call of Duty franchise. After ten years of competing at the top level in Call of Duty, Scump has accumulated an impressive legacy and a sizable fan base. Although he switched to content production at the beginning of 2023 and formally retired, he is still a very talented player whose opinions matter much.
