Back in 2016, MidOne joined Team Secret and went on to win four big tournaments with them over the next three years. This was a fantastic era for Secret and for Dota 2 in general. Lots of tournaments were taking place all year round, and the winner often received $350.000 – $500.000.

In addition to these important victories, MidOne also played in the Grand Final of several Majors and finished 4th at The International 2019. Immediately after that tournament, he joined OG for one year and then returned to Southeast Asia, where he tried to succeed with Team SMG.

The culmination of his SEA dreams was the participation of SMG at The International 12. Unfortunately, they were eliminated in the group stage. This result must have been a bitter one for MidOne. And since Team Secret were having problems of their own, it probably wasn’t long before Puppey picked up a phone and called his former teammate with a proposal.

Secret’s current situation

Team Secret spent most of 2023 in Division II of Western Europe’s Dota Pro Circuit. This basically means that they were roughly in the top 10 in Europe, but near the bottom. Because of that, Secret didn’t compete in any of the DPC Majors, nor The International. They did take part in Riyadh Masters 2023 though, where they finished 9th – 12th.

Now that the Dota Pro Circuit no longer exists, Puppey will likely get invited again to international tournaments simply because his team has a lot of fans. The same principle applies in the case of KuroKy’s Nigma Galaxy.

But these invites won’t come for free. Secret will need to prove themselves. And that’s exactly why MidOne was brought back. His ability to play position 1 and 2 is phenomenal. All he needs is a good captain and a solid roster that can play as well as he does. Puppey certainly fits that description, while the rest of Team Secret’s players are strong enough to play at his level.

The only thing that’s in question now is Puppey’s decision to bring back BOOM together with MidOne. BOOM had one chance at the start of 2023, and he did not do well. But perhaps Puppey saw in him the potential to be really good in a different role. That’s why BOOM will play offlane from now on and MidOne will take the mid role.
