The Dota 2 account-sharing scandal has recently caused quite a stir across the esports scene, as a total of 10 players, including Koma from Virtus.pro, were banned for life by Valve. While the affected teams are looking for new players, the suspended professionals have released new statements explaining how the situation came about.
The banned players recently released a statement via video. The video kicked off with two pros, Kamil “Koma” Biktimirov and Viktor “SuperNova” Galichkin, explaining how they ended up swapping their accounts and what steps they took to cover up their cheating.
Pros give insight into how account sharing came about
Before moving to Virtus.pro, Koma was a Luna Gaming player. He said the team wasn’t exactly happy about making the event’s playoffs because it meant playing fewer games. But the players really wanted to play more and train more to get better. Also, Luna Gaming allegedly faced various in-game issues ranging from connection issues to various technical difficulties. That’s why the team suggested swapping places with the player from S9, so they could win something.
Did it all just start as a joke?
Although players are now saying that it was all just a hoax at first, it became a reality when they pitched the idea to their friends at S9. And S9 willingly participated. The S9 players suggested to the Luna players that they needed the practice and didn’t have much to gain in the tournament anyway. Both teams agreed that they would share the prize money.
However, when the Luna players played with the accounts of the S9 players, their opponents, No Sorry, immediately became suspicious. After playing their first game under the guise of S9, Team No Sorry refused to continue the match because they suspected cheating.
Players wanted to hide cheating
Rumors quickly arose about S9 playing with Luna members and sparked conversation. This made the affected players quite nervous. When the rumors first surfaced, Koma claimed he wanted to come out straight. Although his other teammates agreed with him, they were afraid of getting banned and decided to bypass the D2CL admins’ investigation.
As a result of account sharing and impersonating members of other teams during tournament games, the following players are permanently banned by Valve:
Paradise’
Keintseru
SuperNova
Illusion
Lilskrip
Koma`
Chambl
Limtless
[T]SA
deihraPGL will also ban these players.

Players hired a programmer to hide their logs, but it didn’t help. They finally got caught when Valve and PGL got involved. Players have since apologized and urged tournament organizers (ironically) to step up security measures to ensure something similar can’t happen again.
The 10 players have all acknowledged their mistake and apologized publicly. One of their motivations was openly money, and they explained that they often didn’t have enough funds to even afford the next meal.
While some pros have defended the affected players and urged Valve to show mercy and not ban the players for life, many people in the community are upset.
