The popular esports organization and one of the winningest in the LEC, Fnatic, has announced that one of the most experienced players in the scene, Martin “Wunder” Hansen, is leaving the team to pursue new opportunities.

Fnatic has been in the eye of the storm since the start of the 2023 season in the LEC. The team, on paper, had a spectacular lineup and was poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the first two splits of the season. However, in the Winter Split, they failed to qualify for the Group Stage, and in the spring, the team could not win any games in the tournament’s second phase.

As a result, the organization is considering making several changes to its roster. It all started with the decision to bench game legend Martin “Rekkles” Larsson after he announced a role change.

Fnatic and Wunder part ways

Through a statement on its Twitter account, Fnatic announced the departure of Martin “Wunder” Hansen from the organization on May 12. This announcement comes after the experienced European player sat on the team’s bench due to the incorporation of the young promise Oscar “Oscarinin” Muñoz.

This news ends just over a year for Wunder in the organization, and now, the player becomes a Free Agent heading into the 2023 LEC Summer Split. Wunder was cut from the team’s lineup after they failed to advance beyond the group stage in the Spring Split.

Wunder was one of Fnatic’s mainstays in the Summer Split 2022, as he helped the team qualify for the Worlds 2022 Play-In. In that tournament, the team performed well in the first phase but fell short against T1 and Cloud9 in the Group Stage. In addition, Wunder has proven to be one of the most aggressive top laners in the LEC and the world, so he will likely get a new home very soon.

Javier “Dardo” Zafra, Fnatic’s LoL team manager, said having such an experienced player like Wunder on the team has been a privilege. He also points out that few players worldwide have a natural talent for the game and great experience. Finally, Dardo notes that he and the organization wish him the best in his career in the future and look forward to seeing him again at the Summoner’s Rift.

Wunder is a free agent

The experienced 24-year-old joins free agency in a period where it can be considered a mini offseason, as very few teams contest the MSI 2023. This means that for those teams rethinking their squads, this player could fit perfectly in their schemes.

In addition, teams now need a team with all the necessary tools to perform right out of the box. With the new format used in the LEC, any team can be eliminated from the Split after three weeks of the tournament, so starting in the best possible way is essential.

Wunder has spent his entire career with top teams and has plenty of experience playing in playoffs and big games. This can be critical for those struggling squads who need a clean slate in the upcoming Summer Split 2023.
