The quarterfinals of Roobet Cup 2023 were yet another reminder of CS2’s unpredictability. The game is still fresh enough to allow for major upsets and yesterday we had the opportunity to see a few.

FURIA Esports vs. Apeks: 2-0

FURIA made an excellent game and they absolutely had to. Otherwise, Apeks would have stolen their victory. The scores were as close as they could have been: 13-11 on Ancient and 13-11 on Overpass. In both cases, the Brazilians had the advantage after the first half.

The best player on the server was yuurih, who ended the match with a record of 41-29 and a rating 2.0 of 1.44. FalleN had a rough match this time, getting just 24 frags. But that’s because his strategic responsibilities were quite difficult to fulfill against this opponent.

Virtus.pro vs. OG: 2-0

VP did what we expected them to do. But they struggled a lot more than they should have. OG’s current roster is not even in the top 30, and yet they won 9 rounds on Inferno and 11 rounds on Overpass.

The two players who heavily carried VP were FL1T and mir. Jame had one of those silent matches but he didn’t feed either. His final score was 29-25, which si perfectly reasonable.

BIG vs. Aurora Gaming: 0-2

This was the big upset that I was talking about. BIG should have never lost against Aurora because the two teams are separated by 15 positions in the global rankings. But they were extremely unlucky, while Aurora played incredibly well.

The scores were 14-16 on Ancient and 10-13 on Nuke. Almost the entire BIG roster played well. Four players had an average of around 35 kills, while the 5th finished the match with a score of 28-38.

The reason why BIG lost this match was Norwi and KENSI’s performance. The two Aurora players were remarkable throughout the whole match, finishing with excellent records: 41-33 and 46-38.

Monte vs. Movistar Riders: 2-0

Monte and Movistar Riders had not met before, so this match was, in theory, full of unknown variables. But after the first half of the first map, we knew who would win it. The scores were 13 – 10 on Anubis and 13 – 1 on Overpass.

What’s strange is that Monte did not get carried by sdy or Woro2k, but by kRaSnaL and br0, who finished the match with amazing scores: 39-16 and 36-21.
