The Call of Duty League has received a Sports Emmy nomination thanks to the spectacular grand finale at the CDL Championship Finals 2022 between the Los Angeles Thieves and Atlanta FaZe.
At the time, still playing in the Call of Duty: Vanguard era, the final between FaZe and the Thieves made history for Activision Blizzard. Thanks to the extraordinary series they disputed, the event was nominated for the “Esports Coverage” category.
An honor to be @sportsemmys nominated for our historic 2022 Call of Duty Championship Final between @LAThieves and @ATLFaZe.

In this grand final between Atlanta FaZe and Los Angeles Thieves, we saw how the Californian team crushed FaZe with an extraordinary score of 5-2.
In addition to the Call of Duty event, we can see that its main contenders are none other than the most popular esports in the world:
- CS:GO – BLAST Premier Fall Final
- Dota 2 – The International 11
- League of Legends – Worlds Finals 2022
- VALORANT – VCT Championship Grand Final
It will be tough competition for Activision Blizzard. Also, considering the magnitude of events like TI 11 and Worlds 2022, there is no doubt that being nominated is a great achievement for the Call of Duty League and, of course, Activision.
Second-time CoD receives a nomination at the Sports Emmys
This becomes the second time in the history of our beloved Call of Duty to receive a nomination at the Sports Emmys. Recall that the 2020 season, specifically the grand finale between Dallas Empire and Atlanta FaZe of the CDL 2020 Playoffs, also received this recognition.
On the other hand, this becomes the fourth time Activision Blizzard has been nominated for the Sports Emmys. For 2020 and 2021, the Overwatch League Finals were nominated for this award.
#SportsEmmys nominees for Esports Coverage are…
League of Legends Worlds 2021 Final | @lolesports
Overwatch League 2021 Grand Finals | @overwatchleague

History of esports at the Emmys
In its long history of awarding sporting events, the Emmys announced that esports would be part of its awards starting in 2019. As a result, the nominated events were from Apex Legends, Fortnite, Rocket League, and FIFA. However, the great popularity of League of Legends and its most important event of the year, Worlds, showed absolute superiority, taking the award.
With strong contenders in this award, we will see if Activision, through the CDL, can take this award and overcome the extraordinary events of the rest of esports.
The 44th edition of the Sports Emmy 2023 will be held on May 22nd. In addition, it is broadcast worldwide through different online platforms and free-to-air television in each country.
