The quarterfinals of Worlds 2023 are finally over and the winners were Bilibili Gaming, Weibo Gaming, JD Gaming, and T1.

Everyone expected Weibo, JD, and T1 to win. But the match between Gen.G and Bilibili was regarded as a tough challenge for both teams. And indeed, it was. Ultimately, the Chinese squad proved to be just a bit stronger than the South Korean one, which should make Faker very happy. Because after all, T1 failed multiple times against Gen.G in 2023.

In the eventuality of a Gen.G versus T1 Grand Final, Gen.G’s chances of winning would have been around 80%.

Gen.G vs. Bilibili

Bilibili won the first two games primarily because Gen.G made crucial mistakes at key moments. They also insisted on using the Aphelios plus Azir combination twice, despite failing with it in game 1. Bilibili responded to this decision by picking Jarvan, Renata, and Orianna in game 2, after they had picked the same trio in game 1.

Essentially, Gen.G started this match with a 0-2 handicap and it was all because of their stubbornness. In games 3 and 4, they completely changed their strategy and proved to be the better team. But in game 5, they repeated the same mistake by picking three champions they had used in game 4.

What they wanted to do was extremely obvious, which gave Bilibili the possibility to predict their moves, make adjustments to their game 4 champion composition, and win.

To be fair, these two teams had played before at MSI 2023, where Bilibili won 3-0. So their victory at Worlds shouldn’t surprise us. It’s worth noting, however, that on a different day and with slightly better drafts, Gen.G would have probably won.

NRG vs. Weibo

NRG entered this match as the winners of LCS Summer 2023 and as one of the three teams that finished the Swiss Stage with a record of 3 W – 1 L. But unfortunately for them, they faced the same opponent that defeated them during the Swiss Stage, Weibo Gaming.

This happened because Weibo lost against both G2 Esports and KT Rolster during the previous stage of the tournament, and qualified for the playoffs with a record of 3 W – 2 L.

The match was not easy for Weibo, but it was clear that their understanding of the meta and the game itself is much better than that of NRG. In game 1, their Aphelios plus Milio combo worked well and proved to be very strong in the late game.

In fact, it worked so well that Weibo decided to use four of the game 1 champions in game 2. But this time they won much faster thanks to replacing K’Sante with Aatrox. Game 1 was over in 39 minutes. Game 2 lasted just 33.

In game 3, NRG were obviously demoralized and convinced that they no longer had any chances of winning the match. So they tried a rather fancy draft and lost in 26 minutes.

JDG vs. KT Rolster

KT proved to be a strong team in this match, but they couldn’t match JDG’s prowess. The Chinese team is expected to win the entire tournament. It will be either them or T1, and the winner is going to be decided in the semifinals.

That aside, KT had a brilliant strategy in game 1 and won in less than 30 minutes, using Akali, Aphelios, and Jax. After the 20-minute mark, their champion composition proved to be deadly against JDG’s. But the Chinese crew learned from their mistakes and switched to a different playstyle in the next three games.

However, they did keep Rakan and Orianna as part of their drafts, and picked them in two more games. In fact, they picked Rakan in every single game. What they built around these champions was highly effective, and KT found themselves unable to deal with the pressure. Game 2 finished in less than 26 minutes, game 3 in 27, and game 4 in 33.

KT went back to their Jax pick over and over, but to no avail.

LNG Esports vs. T1

This match was expected to be a slaughter because LNG were nowhere near T1’s level. Despite finishing 2nd in LPL Summer 2023, Faker’s team was simply too good. And that became obvious from the very beginning.

In game 1, T1 gave Faker his signature Orianna and he destroyed the match with her. His score was 3-0-8. He also had 279 last hits in just 26 minutes!

For the second game, LNG kept their Gwen from game 1 but changed everything else. T1 adapted, keeping Aatrox and Rell but combining these champions with a different trio: Sylas, Varus, and Ashe. The game was balanced for the first 20 minutes but then spiraled out of control. T1 won in 31 minutes.

In game 3, down two games, LNG capitulated very quickly and had no hope against Faker’s Azir, who now played against Orianna mid – a reverse of game 1.
