Following the conclusion of the NICKMERCS’ MFAM Gauntlet, the female esports community, specifically, Apex Legends, has lashed out at the tournament organizers. In addition, many professional female gamers, content creators, and community members feel that the tournament lacked inclusivity because only two women were selected to play.

The women’s esports scene is getting much bigger and bigger. Thanks to this, many major organizations have decided to dabble with all-female lineups in titles such as VALORANT, CS:GO, and others. However, when it comes to an unofficial tournament where both men and women participate, the reality is that the lack of inclusion of the marginalized genders can be noticed.

Only two women participated in the NICKMERCS’ MFAM Gauntlet.

As mentioned, only two female players participated in the MFAM Gauntlet tournament organized by the popular content creator NICKMERCS. Let’s remember that the selection process of the players in these events is that the tournament organizers select a captain for each team, who has the power to select two more players to complete his team.

Once the captains were selected and they chose their teams, out of 60 participants, there were only two women, Laurice “GuhRL” Habibi and ClaraAtWork. As a result, social media erupted against the organizers due to the lack of inclusiveness. For example, streamer and competitive player lightyrs was upset in a Tweet posted.

The debate was intense among several personalities in the scene

However, this was only starting here, as this debate included many well-known personalities in the professional Apex Legends scene. Some members of the community agreed with the fact that it is a lack of inclusion. While others point out that, currently, very few women want to be Apex pros. Also, because there is juicy prize money to be handed out, it makes sense that professional players would be selected.

As we note, Patrick “hundredz” Kwon, the SPIRE coach, points out that many women have the talent to become professionals but do not compete at the same level as men. In addition, she also points out that just because she plays Apex to create content and is diamond-ranked, it does not mean she will be selected over an established player.

However, we have popular Apex content creator and streamer DIEGOSAURS who is of the complete opposite opinion. The streamer claims that he has played with many women who are better than him and that more opportunities need to be given to girls so that they can show all their skills.

Also, one of the teams that won the tournament had one of the women as captain, GuhRL. On the other hand, the team where ClaraAtWork played finished in 12th place.

GuhRL defends the selection of the players

GuhRL gave her opinion when everything was hot and pointed out that the organizers select the captains they know and respect. She also points out that it is very common for these captains to want to play this kind of tournament with their friends or the players they usually play with.

Apex Legends does not have, like VALORANT with Game Changers or CS:GO with Impact League, an official tournament division for women only. However, there have been different women’s events over the last few months organized by community members.
