The Dota 2 community is buzzing with excitement as The International 2023 (TI 2023) draws near, and the highly-anticipated Compendium has finally made its in-game debut.

While the era of Arcanas and Immortal-stocked battle passes might be behind us, Dota 2 fans have plenty to celebrate with the release of the “International 2023 Celebration Update” on September 27, 2023. This update introduces comprehensive in-game support for one of the esports calendar’s biggest events, offering players numerous opportunities to get involved and reap fantastic rewards. Let’s dive into the details of the new Compendium system and explore what players can earn through both purchases and leveling up.

The Return of the TI 2023 Compendium

The TI 2023 Compendium makes a nostalgic return, harking back to the earlier days of The International. Starting at a modest $7.50, with a premium version priced at $30, the Compendium bundle not only grants access to the Compendium but also contributes to the event’s prize pool. Players can then embark on a journey to unlock various rewards by either earning or purchasing levels.

Abundant Compendium Rewards

The TI 2023 Compendium offers a cornucopia of rewards to entice players. These rewards include chat voice lines, team and player stickers, loading screens, teleport effects, and a custom HUD skin, among others. Players have multiple avenues to earn levels for free, including winning with heroes used in previous TI matches and excelling in the new fantasy system.

Valve has also introduced a randomized bingo card system that automatically awards points for random occurrences during each stage of the tournament. These occurrences can include ultra kills or specific hero combinations, adding an element of unpredictability to the Compendium progression.

As a tradition, fans can earn their miniature Aegis of Champions by reaching 300 levels, with this year’s Aegis being the most accessible yet. However, Valve has chosen not to include new hero skins in this year’s Compendium, signaling a shift away from large-scale cosmetic releases in favor of seasonal events. While this might disappoint some fans, Valve intends to release a battle pass with alternate game modes, immortals, and arcanas after TI 2023 concludes on October 29, 2023.

A New Focus on Fun and Engagement

Valve’s approach to the TI 2023 Compendium centers on creating a more enjoyable TI experience for players and fans alike. Rather than inundating players with a plethora of cosmetic items, this year’s Compendium emphasizes activities designed to enhance the fun factor during and after the tournament. Features like Fantasy play and Bingo are aimed at fostering engagement and interaction within the Dota 2 community.

The Compendium’s Offering

The 2023 Dota 2 Compendium boasts an array of features and activities:

1. The Road to The International Challenge: Players can take on challenges related to specific heroes used by pro players and teams during the competitive season.

2. Fantasy Draft: An updated Fantasy mode allows players to select their favorite core, mid, and support players each weekend during TI12. Compendium rewards and earned rerolls can be used to enhance players’ selected heroes.

3. Bingo: Compendium owners receive randomly generated Bingo cards each weekend of TI12, with each square representing a potential occurrence during pro matches. Completing a Bingo yields Compendium Points.

4. The Oracle’s Challenge: This prediction-based challenge involves predicting the outcome of TI12, including the progress of teams and in-game stats. In-game predictions can also be made while watching matches, adding to the excitement.

5. Supporter’s Club and Talent Stickers: Fans can support their favorite TI12 teams through the Supporter’s Club, which offers various tiers of rewards. Talent Stickers, featuring casters, commentators, and analysts, will also make a return.

Compendium Pricing

The TI 2023 Compendium is available in two editions:

1. Standard Compendium: Priced at $7.49 USD, it includes six Compendium levels, six Boosters, and access to all Compendium features.

2. Upgraded Compendium: Priced at $29.99 USD, this edition offers 50 Compendium levels, 28 Boosters, and the same features as the Standard Compendium. Additionally, it includes bonus Team Sticker and Player Sticker Capsules, more Loading Screen Treasures, and a Teleport effect.

A significant portion of all Compendium purchases (25%) contributes to the TI12 prize pool.

Should You Purchase the TI 2023 Compendium?

Valve’s decision to revamp the Compendium approach for TI12 has stirred mixed reactions within the Dota 2 community. While the Compendium may appear less content-heavy compared to previous battle passes, it introduces innovative activities that focus on enhancing the overall TI experience. Whether players choose to invest in the Compendium depends on their priorities and expectations.

Nevertheless, this new direction reflects Valve’s commitment to evolving and diversifying its approach to Dota 2 updates while celebrating the game’s competitive spirit. As the TI12 Compendium sets a different tone for the annual Dota 2 extravaganza, fans eagerly await the tournament’s start on October 12, 2023.
