UK regulator: Nintendo Switch is too weak to run Call of Duty

The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) doubts that Nintendo Switch will be able to run the Call of Duty saga, despite the agreement that Microsoft has signed with Nintendo for the series’ games to be released on its systems for a decade. At the same time, the British agency has revealed that the company led by Bobby Kotick tried to adapt CoD to the Switch console and has not succeeded.

Adaptation of Call of Duty to Nintendo Switch

The CMA has published a report investigating Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. According to CMA documents, the regulator has concluded that the current Nintendo Switch console cannot run Call of Duty.

The American firm discusses the “technical limitations of the Nintendo Switch console.”

They clarify that the publisher tried to bring Call of Duty to Switch; but ceased its attempts due to the lack of storage capacity of the console. The game comes to occupy 200 GB on other platforms.

Limited storage is one of the points highlighted by the CMA, thus calling into question Microsoft’s ability to bring Call of Duty to Switch.

Even if the technical gap between the current Switch and PlayStation/Xbox consoles is somehow minimized, there is still the problem of poor optimization which will make the gaming experience horrible.

UK officials also revealed Activision’s previous efforts to create Call of Duty for Nintendo Switch. However, the project was unsuccessful due to the Switch’s restricted capabilities, leading to various storage and other technological problems. In addition, redacted statements were discovered in Activision’s documents, stating the need for too much additional porting work.

The CMA believes that Nintendo Switch may be unable to run a fast-paced, action-intensive game like Call of Duty. Due to Switch’s technical limitations, there will be storage, graphics, and framerate issues. This makes regulators doubt Microsoft’s promise to bring the FPS title to Switch.

While there are some high-end games like Fortnite, Doom Eternal, and Apex Legends available on Nintendo Switch, there is a possibility that we still won’t be able to play the latest Call of Duty on the device.

Microsoft and Nintendo agreement does not mention Switch

Although the CMA looks at Switch, Microsoft’s agreement with Nintendo does not mention this platform. So a door is left open for the arrival of Call of Duty on Nintendo consoles.

Several rumors point to a new system being introduced as a successor to Switch, finally bringing CoD to Nintendo.
