The current Dota 2 meta seems to be heavily focused on support heroes and carry heroes. At the community level, everyone seems to be enjoying the first of these roles.
For many years, the mentality in Dota 2 was “mid or feed”. Players just wanted to be cores and ideally, position 1 or position 2. But after the numerous changes introduced by IceFrog in the last few years, Dota 2 has become a game that can be enjoyed no matter what role you choose to play.
Among the changes that led to this reality was the decrease in the cost of all consumable items, and the ineffectiveness of sharing Tangos. These two changes made it easier for supports to accumulate gold at the start of the match.
Other changes that made life easier for all supports are related to the cost of wards, the elimination of the need to buy or upgrade a courier, and collective gold that it gained when Bounty runes are collected. The introduction of numerous new camps in Dota 2 patch 7.33 was another useful change for the game.
At the moment, the top three heroes at the community level, at least in terms of success rate, are all supports. This is something that was unimaginable five years ago.
Witch Doctor
Despite the numerous nerfs he received in Dota 2 patch 7.34b, Witch Doctor continues to win nearly 55% of the time. He also gets picked in almost a quarter of all games because he’s ridiculously useful at every stage of the game. He can heal your carry, destroy the enemy offlaner, kill an entire enemy team, stun multiple heroes and so on.
You simply cannot go wrong with WD and he’s easy to play even by beginners. These qualities have made him quite popular.
Treant Protector
Treant is another appealing choice because he’s tanky and can protect his carry with his abilities. It’s easy to be a Treant at every stage of the game and hardly anyone will try to kill you once you buy your Aghanim’s Shard. Meanwhile, you can disrupt your enemies and protect your allies with ease.
Warlock
Warlock is not exactly easy to play but his toolkit makes him really engaging. In the laning phase, he can destroy a target or heal it substantially. Paired with another healer, he will make his carry impossible to kill.
