The International 10 is set to break the record for the biggest prize pool in Esports history, with the event offering some $34 million in winnings. The hugely popular Dota 2 competition will surpass last year’s total of $34,330,068, with an increase of just $3,806, making it the biggest in the industry to date.

Why The International 10 Has Such a Large Prize Pool

The increase in prize money is thanks in part to the sale of in-game items within Dota 2, with 2.25% of purchases made going towards The International 10. Battle Passes, Battle Pass Levels and additional cosmetic items contributed in total, which has allowed for the rise in funds. The final prize pool could in fact grow yet further, with the crowdfunding scheme still having a few weeks left to run.

The International 10 prize pool could well top $35 million as a result, with the news that the event has been postponed until 2021 as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic having done little to effect the anticipation of both pros and fans. Developers Valve gave fans an update earlier this week, announcing that both the Dota Pro Circuit and The International 10 had been postponed indefinitely. No new dates are in the pipeline at present, with early estimates of an Autumn return having long been ruled out.

What Does the Future Hold for The International?

Such postponements also raise serious questions regarding The International 11 and its Battle Pass, with fans of Dota 2 having become used to one taking place every summer. However, with The International 10 having already been pushed back to 2021, it could well be that a Battle Pass doesn’t take place at all, which will likely have a major impact upon the prize money.

Valve are thought to be monitoring the situation closely with regards to when The International 10 would be safe to stage, however it could well be some time before fans are treated to seeing their favourite teams battle it out for the most rewarding prize in the whole of Esports.

The highest Esports tournament prize pools over the years are dominated by The International, with the Fortnite World Cup being the only event getting close at $15 million for both its solo and duo competitions.
