Recently, there have been rumors that Evil Geniuses, the organization that won The International 2015 with its Dota 2 team, is about to leave North America after many years of struggle and sign a South American roster.

This would mean that players like Tal “Fly” Aizik and Artour “Arteezy” Babaev will soon be out of a job. It remains to be seen how each player will deal with the consequences of EG’s decision, if indeed it goes through.

There are many reasons to believe that the rumors are true. One of them is that Shannon “SUNSfan” Scotten, a famous Dota 2 caster and content creator, said during The International 11 that he has inside information about some major NA news that will impact Dota 2 and will be revealed after the end of the tournament.

He didn’t want to say what the news was, but he stated on his podcast that it will make waves in North America.

Evil Geniuses’ rumored decision to leave North America

EG has been struggling to find success in Dota 2 for many years. Arguably, its Dota 2 team has been the strongest in North America and the results of that team have been decent.

But right now, there is very little money to be made in Dota outside of The International. This means that unless you get a top six result at this tournament, you will almost certainly lose money as an organization that needs to pay high salaries to top players.

The expectation of an org that pays players like Arteezy is that they’ll prove themselves when it matters most. Instead, EG lost in a very shameful way at The International 11. They were eliminated by two South American teams whose players probably make a fraction of what the EG roster does.

According to the rumors, EG will sign the Thunder Awaken roster but with a few modifications. They will also get out of the NA region completely, which means that the South American region will suddenly become really tough for a lot of competitors.

Meanwhile, Soniqs and TSM are probably celebrating. Finally, the Boogeyman is gone! The region can now be fully dominated by them and whoever else wants to join.

The Players

We don’t yet know what will happen to EG’s current roster. But it’s pretty obvious that they’re not going to retire anytime soon. All of the players are really strong and will likely find or form top European teams. It’s just that together, they didn’t have a good enough synergy.
