Riot Games has never had a favorable opinion about gambling. So much so that the corporation refused to sponsor such brands. However, Riot Games is apparently reconsidering this type of sponsorship.

The Esporkolik media outlet publicized this information, highlighting that the corporation would allow brands to promote game-related products.

All of this would be done more in detail in VALORANT, standing out above games such as League of Legends. This is a move that, one way or another, was bound to happen at some point.

Sponsorships of this kind are not new for esports, especially if Valve is one of the companies that allow it in CS:GO. Moreover, if we consider that its rival will launch Source 2, this could be a blow to the table against which Riot will try to fight.

Riot Games could count on sponsorships from gambling brands

This announcement has caused a stir in the fan community because many esports fans do not so well receive gambling brands. Many people believe that these types of sponsorships can encourage behaviors such as gambling, so introducing them into esports with such a young audience could be dangerous.

However, although it is not widely shared, this is a logical move. Above all, taking into account that the current industry has an unsustainable economic model, which in the long run will take its toll on many. So bad management of money results in need to resort to this type of sponsorship; to somehow seek sustainability in the future.

Perhaps many people wonder how this type of sponsorship will affect the tournaments, considering each country’s legal requirements. However, we will have to wait for this legislation to be approved; to determine how these sponsorships will affect the teams and the competitions.

If we consider the case of Spain, esports is so far not registered in the country’s sports legislation. So it is not known if they will follow the same rules.

Sponsorship limitations

An excellent example of this type of sponsorship can be the case of F1. In this sport, tobacco sponsorship is prohibited; however, these large corporations have smaller companies that sign sponsorship agreements on their behalf.

One of the best-known cases is that of Ferrari and Mission Winnow since it was the owner of Marlboro Tobacco.

As we have already mentioned, different countries have different regulations regarding the sponsorship of gambling brands, so we must wait for Riot Games or legal experts to clarify the situation.
