After G2 Esports was crowned champion of the LEC Season Finals 2023, the eve of the upcoming Worlds 2023, the season-ending tournament of the League of Legends competitive scene, has officially begun. As a result, the final countdown for Worlds 2023 is underway, and Riot Games already made the first draw, so we already know which will be the first matches of the tournament, which are part of the Play-In Phase.
After crowning G2 Esports at the LEC Season Finals, Riot Games used the Arena Sud de France stage in Montpellier to hold the Play-In Stage Draw for Worlds 2023. As a result, this tells us that we are already very close to the season’s top event kicking off.
Riot Games announce Play-In Stage Draw for Worlds 2023
As mentioned, Riot Games, at the Arena Sud de France in Montpellier, held the draw for the first matches of the Play-In Stage for the upcoming Worlds 2023. In addition, they also published it on their social networks to inform the entire community.
The #Worlds2023 Play-In Stage Draw:

As we can see, the crossings are defined, and the first matches we will enjoy will be the following:
Group A
- GAM Esports vs. LOUD
- PSG Talon vs. Movistar R7
Group B
- Team BDS / Golden Guardians vs. Team Whales
- CTBC Flying Oyster vs. Detonation FocusMe
While it is true that this was a very important draw, Riot Games did it in a violent and, above all, simple way, by the “innocent” hand of Andrei “Odoamne” Pascu, who was in charge of opening the envelopes.
First, we knew both groups’ seeded teams or leaders, where we have GAM Esports and PSG Talon leading Group A. On the other hand, the winner of the WQS between Golden Guardians MAD Lions and CTBC Flying Oyster are the Group B leaders.
Finally, Odoamne drew the envelope to know the rivals of these teams, and we have that LOUD and Movistar R7 (LATAM teams) complete Group A, while Team Whales and Detonation FocusMe do the same in Group B.
LATAM could spring a surprise in the Play-In Phase
There is no doubt that the LATAM teams arrive at this Play-In Phase with a lot of conviction to win one of the tickets to the Group Stage of the main event of Worlds 2023. While it is true that Movistar R7 is facing PSG Talon, the team has a chance to win. In addition, the Mexicans know what it’s like to beat GAM Esports, as they did in the MSI, while LOUD looks like a very accessible opponent.
On the other hand, it is also fair to note that Movistar R7 and LOUD avoided Group B. Therefore, avoided facing Golden Guardians/Team BDS, two very strong teams in their respective regions.
With these crossings ready, Worlds 2023 has practically everything to kick off its new edition. In addition, let’s remember that the top event of the LoL season will be played from October 10, 2023.
