Dota 2 patch 7.34d has been explored extensively at The International 12. This tournament is showing us just how powerful some carry heroes are in this meta. This guide presents three of them.

Chaos Knight

chaos knight

Valve

Chaos Knight has exceptional capabilities and item builds in this patch. At TI12, he has been picked more than 30 times with a win rate of nearly 65%. At the community level this hero has a win rate of 55% and a pick rate of 11%.

CK excels thanks to his combination of damage, stats, and powerful illusions that will overwhelm most enemy heroes. The ability to close the gap very quickly from 700 range using Reality Rift and then stun for 2-3.25s is incredible. Mix that with an Armlet and an Echo Saber and you get a complete monster that will kill you in a few seconds.

CK gets quick kills but is hard to kill thanks to being a strength hero that builds armor and even more strength. Virtually, all of his standard items give him stats and damage. If you get to the 25-minute mark, you’re usually fighting against a 3000 HP tank with carry capabilities.

CK also farms relatively fast thanks to his Chaos Strike and illusions. You can further increase this speed by purchasing a Manta Style or damage items. But in general, you’ll want to just focus on becoming hard to kill.

The stronger CK becomes, the stronger his illusions become. By the time he’s level 12 and has 2 illusions when he casts his ultimate, it becomes really hard to fight directly into him unless you’re an Ursa with Battlefury, a Troll Warlord, or perhaps a Sven. Illusion-based heroes also do well against CK because he cannot identify the main target.

Spectre

spectre

Valve

Spectre’s win rate in professional tournaments is through the roof. At TI12, this hero got picked 16 times so far and won 81.2% of all matches. That’s a fabulous stat. At the community level, Spectre’s win rate is around 55%. But in the right hands, the chance of success increases significantly.

Spectre’s strength comes from the combination of her abilities and core items. Some of these items, such as Blade Mail, are relatively cheap, greatly increase her farming speed and make her hard to kill in fights.

Once Spectre reaches a high level of tankiness, she will destroy your entire team before going down during an Aghs ultimate.

Spectre’s early game is tough. But if you know what to do in those first 10 minutes and have a team that can create space for you for another 10 minutes, after the 20 minute mark the game is heavily in your favor. Just don’t fall too much behind in networth.

Spectre’s Dispersion reflects 20% of all damage. Blade Mail adds to that another 20% plus 20 raw damage. This makes Spectre’s ability around 125-150% more effective in the early game. And this item is cheap, costing around 2000 gold.

By the time Spectre gets to Manta or Radiance, the game becomes very easy to win. You just Haunt and the entire enemy team needs to run away. During those seconds, your team can initiate and kill 1-2 heroes.

Wraith King

skeleton king

Valve

Wraith King does an excellent job during the early mid game and becomes very strong as time goes on. The biggest mistake to avoid when playing this hero is buying defensive or fancy items. We recently had the chance to see this mistake on the big stage, at The International 12.

Virtus.pro were far ahead of Team Spirit, but their WK decided to buy an Aghs instead of a damage item. This immediately resulted in disaster because the team no longer had enough damage to kill a target in team fights.

The ideal WK build includes an Armlet, a Desolator, and a Blink Dagger. Whether you buy a BKB or not is up to you. If you’re playing against lots of stuns and slows, you probably should. But if you’re playing against a lot of magical damage, just buy stats and you won’t need to worry.

The big advantage of this hero is that he has two lives in every major fight. This allows you to worry less about getting killed and more about dealing damage. If you are tanky enough, have a bit of mobility, and deal a lot of damage, the enemy team will find it hard to fight you.

The fact that you also have a stun is a bonus. On top of that, WK farms quickly thanks to his skeletons. It’s amazing just how fast this hero becomes self-reliant when it comes to jungling.
