For the first time since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and international conflict, the Overwatch World Cup returns this year. The tournament will run most of the year, where teams worldwide will come together to advance to the 16-team group stage.

This is the fifth installment of the Overwatch World Cup and promises to be an action-packed competition. The best Overwatch players in the world will battle it out to secure a spot on their respective nations’ rosters in March. Countries have already started to unveil their team selectors and coaches.

Format of the Overwatch World Cup 2023

Teams in six regions will compete in regional qualifiers for the Overwatch World Cup 2023. The tournament format will be similar to previous tournaments, where teams will undergo rigorous preparation for the qualifiers.

Thirty-six teams will be the ones participating in the regional qualifiers. The top 16 teams will advance to the group stage of the World Cup, which will be conducted as a LAN.

The LAN competition will be a round-robin between the teams. The teams will likely be divided into four groups, four of which the top eight teams will advance to the final round.

When is the Overwatch World Cup 2023?

The group stage and the eight-team World Cup finals will take place in the fall. Blizzard has not yet announced dates and times for the group stage and finals.

The group stage will consist of the 16 nations that qualified from the six regional qualifiers held in June.

So far, the time between the group stage and the finals is unknown. It is also unknown whether they will occur during the same weekend. Therefore, the single elimination bracket will be used for the eight-team finals.

Countries and regions competing in the World Cup Trials and online qualifiers

One team from China will receive a direct invitation to the group stage due to the country’s circumstances and the fact that they have consistently performed well, finishing two Overwatch World Cups in second place, among other achievements.

The team will not participate in the online qualification phase, and there will also be no World Cup trials in China. Therefore, the trial procedure in China will differ from other nations/regions.

These are the 36 teams fighting to reach the LAN Finals.

  • Americas Conference (AMER) A: Canada, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the United States.
  • Americas Conference (AMER) B: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru.
  • Europe and Middle East Conference (EMEC) A: Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain.
  • Europe and Middle East Conference (EMEC) B: Germany, Norway, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Sweden, and Turkey.
  • Asia-Pacific Conference (APAC) A: China, Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Philippines, and South Korea.
  • Asia-Pacific Conference (APAC) B: Australia, India, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Thailand.
